Raritan 911: Robocop

I debated EV thread or here.

Last night - I'm in my model 3 and made a right on red with plenty of distance with the oncoming car. This other car, let me say, a Model X makes nooo thought or effort to let off his accelerator. Driver was definitely not going speed limit and I consider myself to 'pull out' 😛 / maneuver pretty quick. Basically on my ass and flashes a bunch of times. I was LIVID since I had kid with me. These extremely fast and big (the X isn't even that big) cars just want to barrel through everything. Red light like 50 yards ahead. Stopped. I hit my brake lights many times to annoy them and I had the motion to hit Park and get out and give this ass an earful but again, kid with me so I did not. I was still cursing and I explained to her what happened and prayed that they were going to gymnastics too and I would have her go in and then have some words with this driver. (that didn't happen but I prayed). There is a little more with another maneuver to get around us and this car going in the shoulder to do so and they hit another red light. WHERE ARE THESE PEOPLE GOING trying to kill people?

This past weekend - Here is another one about big SUVS - pull into restaurant for rows and far from any other spots. Parked perfectly between lines. Kid is napping so I stay in car while rest goes in. The newest suburban (HUUUUGE) pulls next to us. Out of all places, next to us. Parked offset. Two feet between our cars. Wife gets out carefully and puts on jacket and all the zippers are hitting my car! Then she walks towards the rear door and I saw the baby seat. I was terrified. She open the rear door. Knicks my side mirror. Knows she did and still continues to open the door. All this is happening as I roll down window and just hold the door and I say lady STOP! Driver has to pull suburban fwd so that this door can actually close. I immediately move our car to another spot after they leave with their 4 kids.

i mean, not saying the other driver was right, but if he was going the posted speed limit (you say he wasnt, i assume this means he was going much faster) when you pulled out in front of him there should be no reason for him to need to slow down or let off. unless you cut the gap too close.

@JerseyPete nope. But has license plate had 24 in it. Which in chinese culture means 'easy to die'....

@shrpshtr325 hmm you should daily a TRUCK (not truck). Oh you do!

not sure what this is supposed to mean, but right of ways and all that do matter.

note i never said passing on the shoulder was ok, bc iv had two near misses where people tried that shit on me, its certainly scary

I’ve learned to just be a defensive driver like they taught in driver ed. If someone wants to ride my ass, I’ll gladly pull over and let them tailgate the next person. I’m not dealing with that crap. If You’re in such a hurry, go right ahead.
Today I was driving where 2 lanes merge into 1. You go, I go, simple zipper effect. But of course some douche (in a pickup of course, lol) decided he needed to get in front of as many people as possible (just to sit in the same single line of traffic). So he cuts left into the oncoming traffic lane to get around someone merging. Almost goes head on with an oncoming car. Like, almost died to be in front of one more car in a line of traffic.

Then a few miles up the road, he pulled into a liquor store. In such a rush to get some beers man?

I just went thru the same thing while pickup lunch from your dad. I was about to turn onto Easton when an 18 wheeler went thru their red light. Followed by a van, then a pickup. All of them would have creamed my tiny little Chevy if I pulled out.

I do this often, especially with family in the car. Many times I have heard in a courtroom, "What prevented you from deescalating the situation? Why did you engage the other person? What kept you from driving/walking away?"
At least twice in the past year I was driving north on Rt 31 at night and had people on my rear. I let them pass and 5 minutes later they are pulled over with a cop. I don't bother to look over at them, just keep driving.

@THATmanMANNY

No one likes to hear this but...

You were at fault. Meaning, if there was a collision caused by you pulling into traffic, you would be at fault. You are entering the roadway and have to yield the right-of-way to all vehicles already traveling on said roadway. And that's regardless of whether or not they are traveling at or above the speed limit. Yes, if a car is driving completely reckless, maybe 30+ MPH over the speed limit, no lights on at night, weaving quickly between lanes on a 4-lane roadway, or something, then it would be a contributing factor. But the standard 10-15 MPH over the posted speed limit is not "reckless". That's moving with traffic in NJ.

No one involved in accidents wanted to hear this. It was a joy to be the messenger at times.

Your parking lot story rings true. I am getting a vasectomy in the morning so I won't ever have to worry about door dings or Cheerios in my cars.

Cheerios are nothing. A child propelling vomit with the stench of sour milk into every nook and crevice of your two week old vehicle really sucks. Give credit to the guy that detailed my wife's Acura as it looked and smelled brand new.

You’re right but this guy was flying then. And driving instructor and parents always taught to let off and look two or three times through all intersections. My bad. But not all do that.

Officer: why were you going 60 in a 45?
-Well @Carson said it was okay and we have it in writing.
-please step out of the car

This is where people get confused. You aren't required by law to drive defensively. If you have the right of way, you have it regardless. Driving defensively reduces the likelihood you'll be involved in a collision, but it isn't required by law. You don't have to drive defensively but you can't drive carelessly. Sometimes it's a fine line.

I had a few cases where a sober driver caused an accident with a drunk driver. The sober driver gets cited for the offense causing the accident (failure to yield, following too closely, etc.) and the drunk driver gets arrested. The DWI is listed as a contributing factor, but it doesn't erase other bad behavior. Blows people's minds.

@THATmanMANNY

no judgement here but despite the level of douche the person who was brighting you etc... I would have to agree with the parts mentioned that in this case you need to either allow the person to pass or wait. I think its good you had the kiddo in the car to temper the road rage percolating.

sometime in the future you will be teaching your kids to drive and this changes your perspective on all things related to driving. I am about to teach boy #3 how to drive once he finishes his 6 hours. Just like I told the other 2 the first thing I say to them is if I ever see you driving like me you will not be driving as I know I have some bad tendencies and even the occasional road-ish rage comment or horn beep or flip of the bird.

In all seriousness, the next few months of teaching him how to drive will probably be a good refresher on defensive driving for myself as I told the other 2 to ALWAYS expect the other drivers around you to do the WRONG thing.

p.s. The first two sons passed the road test on the first try, so I take credit for that as well - no pressure on #3 at all LOL.

Drive safe!

I think this is how my kids are gonna roll into flavor town their first year:

My girls are 5 and 2, but I'm already dreading the driving days. More specifically, their friends driving days. And boys. I clearly recall all of the dumb shit I did as a 17,18,19 year old driver and I'm horrified at the thought of my kids being passengers in that sort of environment.

Also, my neighbor's daughter is a recent HS grad, and seeing the cars that pick her up at times does not help this anxiety!

Parent of 2 16-year-olds here. I'll just say that these days, shit is different. There's no way they can get away with the same stuff we did as kids. You literally cannot skip school anymore - the school calls you. Every parent knows where every kid is, pretty much every day all day. While shit still slips through the cracks, it's just nnot like it was when I was in HS. I mean, not even close.

Also, after you have spent a considerable portion of your life driving them around like a taxi, you will longingly await the day when they can drive themselves to practice/school/anywhere else.
