Is strava going from suck to blow?

but still, i (and i would imagine everyone else) has better things to spend almost an hour of our lives listening to instead of people complaining about strava. (i assume thats what they are doing based on the title and the title of this thread)

They're super in tune with those companies so it's interesting to hear what they're hearing and the issues they're running into. You'd think we'd have better things to do than complain on MTBNJ about a video about complaining about Strava and yet...

Strava is unfortunately extremely woven into the fabric of our sport so I do find it pretty interesting what features they're rolling out and breaking. To each their own.

Probably more of a phone thing than a Strava thing. It looks like it tried to use cell towers to locate you (maybe your phone lost gps signal for some reason) but why they are so far away is an interesting question.

Also, there’s been a lot of solar flare activity lately which impacts GPS, so that could be another factor that contributed to the blips.

I stopping using Strava long ago but thought some might find interest in this:

Interesting... after reading most of it (a lot to go through) it sounds like Strava is getting ready to set up a "Coaching Account" where you pay a fee and then you can get permission from users to have access to their data. All under the guise of "protecting user privacy" which I suppose isn't necessarily a bad thing.

IOW: Strava found users of their platform who are making money off it without them getting a cut and is setting up a method to monetize that aspect of the system.

At least that's my WAG, looking at the situation purely from a "Follow the Money" point of view.

interesting, and it did not go out to all users unless they meant all users of the API (i did not get the email but i dont use the API directly)

I got it, and I have an API key.
I screen scrape the stuff I need... Total against the rules

Hard to say if it will really kill 3rd party integration. More likely is Strava will work out a licensing agreement.

Another POV to consider is the various online privacy regulations in Europe, which are different than in the US. Some of this may be in response to what they may see as writing on the wall.

The problem, and DCRainmaker makes the point well, it's all as clear as mud.

If Strava just came out and said something like that, it would be acceptable. But they hide their intentions, give minimal notice to the apps that use the API and piss off their users at the same time.

The interweb chats on this are certainly blowing up around this. I didnt pay much attention at first but in reality how many people record their activity directly into Strava.?

Once I thought about it and understand it better, Strava is really my data collector from Garmin & Zwift mostly, and maybe sometimes I send data to RideWithGPS?

So how they can justify cutting off API access to for sharing data etc... is totally odd. And to do it in a way that gives all their current partners no way to reply on short notice is complete BS.

The big response of course is to have people cancel Premium subscription because of this... will evaluate this myself.

I'd like to see the percentages, but I'm assuming the people affected by this are Apple Watch users. People with Coros/Garmin/Wahoo/Etc should have easy API tie-ins to things like TrainerRoad, Intervals.ICU, TrainingPeaks etc.

I'm sure if you're using the Strava app on your phone, Fitbit or whatnot you're not worrying too much about integration into apps or have a coach who would review your data.
