Verizon Droid

I'm using Verizon Incredible 2

That's a great phone.

All the VZW LTE phones are awesome. Really, I haven't found one I didn't like. But the dualmode devices (evdo+lte) kill batteries.

I can see 4g for a mifi or aircard, but I don't have a use for it on my phone.

I'll wait until voice over lte is mature, and then you'll only need 1 radio and get much better battery life.

full LTE coverage has got to be like a decade away no? Or do you mean it will switch off evdo most of the time?

Wound up going with the bionic this evening. I'm loving it so far. LTE is crazy quick and the phone itself is very smooth and fluid. Motoblur isn't all that bad, I guess I can live with it until some ROMs are out. My biggest dislike is the display. Its crisp and clear yet pixellated at the same time. Tough to explain, but its not a dealbreaker for me. So hopefully the prime isn't officially announced tomorrow 😀

GoodBye iPhone

Finally figured out battery drainage issue on my Droid Charge - seemed to be mostly due to k-9 mail's push function. I have it now set to poll every 15 minutes. After 5 hours of idle'ing the battery is at 96%. Before, it was going down to 86%. Also ordered a couple extra batteries and a charger.

After soft bricking my phone a few times due to a bug in clockwork recovery tool, I finally got OpenVPN working on my phone! It was a pain in the ass with lots of experimenting and the interface could be improved somewhat, but at least it works.

The fact that clockwork recovery doesn't work is kind of a pain, but I guess I should be fine between making backup images with Odin and Titanium Backup. Now I gotta wipe everything out again and do a clean install/configuration of everything.

why is it polling a push function? Just use gmail! have a gmail account pick up whatever other email address you have out there, works great.

I need to set it up with my work mail as well which uses zimbra (exchange server). I don't like the default mail client, so I'm using K-9. Default setting is to push email when it arrives. For some reason that sucks battery.

We use touchdown email at work which blows.... I got the exchange admin to let me "pilot" good link. Awesome so far.

I found this to be true with the Bionic as well. I returned it last night and went back to my DroidX. Battery life was number one, add on Blur plus the screen and I didn't feel like it was worth what I paid for it. Hopefully some next gen lte radios come down the pipe sooner than later. I do miss having that speed in my pocket...

Spotted elsewhere......

What are your impressions on this phone? Is the battery life any better?

There is some thing seriously wrong with the lte radios. All the lte phones are screwed up. Hopefully a firmware flash can fix it.
I'm doubting lte iphone for the 5

no complaints about my thunderbolt, now that its rooted the battery life is about double what it was.

i'm with you Luke. if that shows up with LTE i'll be shocked.

Screwed up in what sense? The battery life is fubared for sure, but otherwise the Bionic was very quick and responsive and seemed pretty damn stable.

Im due for an upgrade, how bad is the real world battery life on these phones? My 2 year old D1 will last for 2 days with light use, but I can kill it in less than 3 hours with heavy use if I try. They are worse than that?

I just did an hour ride with my sirius app running which is one of the worst killers of battery. Took about 15% of the battery. On wifi the app isn't nearly as bad, but 3g/4g streaming will kill it in 4-5 hours. With it rooted and normal use i'm getting 2 days. More than enough for me.

Interesting. I'm still sitting tight with my OG Droid waiting for an LTE phone that's worthy of an upgrade. I held off on the Bionic for the exact reasons you listed.

So the Vigor/Incredible HD or whatever they are calling it should be out in October and the Nexus Prime in November. Getting tired of waiting though.

Whats supposed to be wrong with the LTE radios? Mine usually receives between 8-11MBs...about 2-3 times faster than my home cable internet. Actually riding though denville this morning I started picking up 4g which must be a new upgrade to a tower. There are apps that can keep the phone off 4g and only receive 3g. I have one, but I just dont bother using it.

Im really glad I went though the process of rooting it. All the verizon horseshit is now gone, got my wifi/3g/4g teather back and the phone is actually far more stable and much faster.

I didn't do any scientific comparisons but after a while you get a sense for where your battery should be at X-o'clock with a normal day's usage. In my observation the Bionic was draining much faster than I was used to. And supposedly the Bionic is the best of the LTE phones for battery life.

I suppose you can set up juice defender and throttle all of your apps that are getting background data etc, but at that point what is the sense in having the phone in your pocket for $100 a month?

The radio doesn't handle switching towers or networks properly. All the lte phones share the same radio. It decimates the battery and kills the data connection. A new lte radio needs to be developed.
I don't know how you guys use htc sense or moto blur. They took the fantastic android os and made it AOL.
Root and rom to a vanilla android os

Out of curiosity, as being an exchange admin, is there a reason why you are using a 3rd party email client as opposed to the built in one? I have a droid x and it works fine for me.
