IGVENTURE

i thought about fruity pebbles but I say the loops got that shit beat. I have never seen fruity pebbles on a t-shirt...have you? You've reached iconic status when you get on a t-shirt.

joe i'd give your rack an 8.5.

frosted flakes are solid, especially the bottom of the box when you get the pulverized sugar that melts in your mouth. 4x more addicting then crack...this has been proven with lab mice.

Cinnamon Toast Crunch should be illegal they're so good. Agree about Fruity Pebbles too.

We've never met but I poke my head in here every now and then and this made me think of your century ride.

Bearscat Recap

Me and Kirt role into Wawayanda at about 7:45 am, for those keeping score at home this is my 9th race this year. They park us along the road heading toward the beach area. This makes for a very convenient pit as you make the turn of the lap. Not having to drag my 500 lb. cooler two miles up the road made me very happy. Also it gives you the opportunity to kill two birds with one stone, when you're done your race and changing out of your bib shorts you can stand there bare assed and cheer other racers on at the same time.

The warm up is more about trying to calm the jitters before the race then about getting the legs ready to tear into the single track. We are gonna be on our bikes for over 5 hrs. After some race instruction by Jeff we line up by category and start the 50.

The open men go off first and then us 45+ guys start 5 minutes behind them. Me and teammate Clapper stay together with the plan to keep it dialed back at tempo on the flats and fire road climbs but push a little in the tech stuff to flow through the rocks. This worked until about pickle were the course began to get gummed up with guys off there bikes. With Clapper behind me I was riding aggressively yelling UP UP as I approached people fumbling through rocky sections. UP UP is my nice way of saying get out of my way and it seemed to work. I made it through pickle and rattlesnake cleanly but when I looked back Clapper was not with me any longer.

Kris Weber became my riding partner up rattlesnake, he made an Aerosmith reference when he mumbled rattlesnake shake. At the time I just heard him say Aerosmith rattlesnake. Aerosmith Chip Away at the Stone would have been more accurate at wayway. For the record Mama Kin is my favorite Aerosmith song. Ok lets move on.

So me and Weber are trading places back and forth for like the next 10 miles. Coming into sitting bear I decide to thrown it down, its so much fun bombing down into it in this direction. I've done this section enough times to know the lines but still dab in a few spots. Coming out of sitting bear and heading toward the aid station I put a gap on Weber and a few others that I was riding with. These guys find me again on the climb up red, my chain popped off when I downshifted and they pedalled by me.

I put the chain back on the ring and continue the climb up red behind Weber and crew. At the top I decide to pull out ahead and bomb the downhill, another section I know well and feel confident with carrying speed. As I take off Kris stays right behind me all the way to the bottom and as we make the hard right to the punchy climb I hear Weber yell from behind me have a good race Chris I'm out. But at first I didn't know what the hell he said. After I continued on and realized he wasn't behind me my brain pieced together Weber's message. After the race he told me he double flatted, bummer.

Alone again I roll the rest of the way solo and finally come to the start finish. The last few miles of the lap seem to drag on forever, its always more fun when you're riding with someone. At the start of the next lapped I rolled along with one of the VTC/Bike tech guys, I didn't get his name. But it made the time go quicker and we pushed a good tempo pace to keep from lagging on the second lap. We stayed together until the climb up to lookout, at the top my VTC friend was not in sight so I bombed down and headed toward pickle.

This time this section hurt more, I didn't have the energy to power through the tech stuff and had to dial it back. Pickle then the climb up rattlesnake took a lot more effort then the 1st lap. Despite the fatigue I felt no cramps and was still passing people along the way.

There were sections on the course that I saw no one for awhile and I would panic until I saw an arrow indicating that I am was going the right way. Occasionally I encouterd hikers that seemed befuddled. One woman asked me inquisitively as I rode by Is this the end ? Not knowing what to say I shot back just as inquisitivley of the world?

Finally I caught up to someone in team colors, Santalucia. 26er is a real good technical rider but his tank was running low and I ended up passing him. As encoragement he gave me a heart felt fuck you as I passed. This seemed to work, passing 26er made me feel good. He also told me Kirt was about 1 or 2 minutes up the trail and he didn't think there were many 45+ guys up ahead. Suddenly there seemed like light at the end of the tunnel.

So with thoughts of placing well in 45+ in my head I continued on through fisherman's with renewed vigor. Coming out of the turn I hit the gas and my chain just went clunk. I looked down and saw my derailleur dragging on the ground and in and instant my strong finish was smashed. Game over.

I walked out to the fire road and wished 26er luck as he passed me and I stood there with my useless bike. I took note of the time and waited for the next 45+ guy to come through so I would be able to reference myself with his finish. Clapper rolled by me 9 minutes later, which was good enough for him to get 4th place at the finish line.

So I guess I would have finished 4th if I didn't break my derailleur, but I guess a lot of other guys who had mechanicals could have also said the same thing. oh well. The funny thing is with very little endurance training this year I was pretty much putting in the same finish I had as last year, 4th place. The thing that helped me this year was I felt a lot more comfortable in the tech stuff. I really enjoy the big 25mile laps as well, it feels like your going on an adventure when you start the lap. I wish they had this race again in the fall, it sucks that I have to wait until next year to do this again.

Congrats Clapper😀

nice recap chris. sorry to hear about the derailleure, sounds like you were running stong.

ps. i too am one of the silent ones who look foward to reading your blog, thank you.

Good job in any case bro. +1 on the end of the world line. They should give bonus points in time for humor during a race. Maybe call it extreme comedy or x-jokes games.

Great race dude, you looked really strong at that point. Sorry for yelling obscenities at you but I needed someone to yell at or I was going to throw myself off a cliff, Thank you. You should of took my bike

you, like utah always have the ablility to have a smile on your face even in times of pain. i enjoyed the obscenities. had I been racing for 1st I may have drop kicked you off you're bike ninja style and gone 26 the rest of the way.

Well its the end of the world as we know it and i feel fine.

Bearscat Recap of Recap

Looking at the number of people who bailed after one lap of the BS50 is confirmation that this is a tough race. It is a tough course but I really like it. The time seems to go fast doing 2 big laps verses running around a course doing 6 or more laps.

Over the winter I put a lot of mtb miles at technical places with teammates (Kirt, Woody, Utah, Falco, 26er...) at Ringwood/Ramapo, Wawayanda, and Allamuchy. These are some of my favorite trails in the state and it really helped me this year at races with technical stuff.

As far as training goes this year I haven't tailored a specific program to peak for a particular race. Doing this would help me to get closer to a podium finish but I have been enjoying riding with teammates and just showing up to races and giving it my best shot. Spending 5-6hrs on a bike is a good way to prepare for these enduro's but doing it alone blows. Its easier to train for the H2H races because I can meet a teammate on the trail to preview the racecourse and ride. I do plan to get serious for Cathedral Pines in November. Everyone will be cx racing while I will be putting in some long endurance training miles. 8 laps this year or bust this year.

This Week

Following the BS50 I decided it would be a good time for a rest week. I dnf'd the race but I still got in over 4 hrs. of a hard effort, which was enough to put a hurtin on me.

Tuesday I met Utah, Falco, JP and Norm at MTBNJ HQ. Unlike last week when we said we we're going to dial it back, this week we actually did. We all needed a stupid slow recovery ride. Well at least me, Norm and Utah did. Utah is still nursing an illness of some kind that has greatly affected his breathing. Falco had already done 3hrs of mtbing earlier that day with Rob so he was content to take it easy and JP just came home from an ice cream and poolside vacation...he showed up in flip flops and a popsicle stick in his mouth.

I must say that falco is looking more stylish every time the kid shows up for these rides. His legs are always freshly shaved, he has white road shoes and interesting socks to match, even when he pulled a rain jacket out of his pocket it was pro. Fred I think you've lost you're title to falco.

After the ride Nat fed us. We inhaled fresh pasta and babka that was way better then the dry shit I remember as a kid. The conversation was pretty relaxed and we we're about to leave when the topic of religion came up. Growing up in Roselle I went to catholic school because the public school was for people who pump gas for living. In my 12yrs. of Catholic education I had the fear of god beaten into me, so I still go to church. For me religion has done way more good then harm. I'll say that my parents who always showed me and others love had way more of an influence on me. If there is a God he doesn't teach hate, people do.

There is one thing I noticed with the BS50 results. Anyone who didn't make the time cut off at the aid station during the second lap, their results show as only riding one lap. I missed the cut-off at the aid station on lap 2 by 6 minutes. I had a mechanical on the 2nd lap so I was pissed when they wouldn't let me continue. So not everyone gave up. Tough race course though, I was riding a full rigid and could never get into a flow.

Bummer about the mechanical. Going fully rigid is really difficult for the BS50.

They need to put the time cut off in to keep the day moving. Without the cut off the results and award's presentation would be way to late and no one would want to stick around to wait.

I agree about the cutoffs, just unfortunate that it affected me. I just wanted to finish, even though my time would have sucked. Next up DH40.

Keep your posts coming, I enjoy reading them.

Game on.

No racing this wknd., other then chasing around Norm, Utah and Falco at Lewmo on Saturday. Me Kirt and JP got spit out of the back on this one. I was strong enough to stay ahead of Kirt and JP but in Kirt's defence I don't think he was 100% on Saturday. JP is still working on the speed thing, he thinks he is a better roadie then mtb. If he does a crit he might think differently...did JP do a crit yet? Well anyway he better do Battenkill next year, Norm's renting an RV for the team and we're going up in style next April.

Also my suspicions are correct, the new Maxxis Ignitors suck. The exo sidewall is beefy enough but they messed with the thread count in the tread which apparently makes the tread very vulnerable to punctures. I am talking a simple pinhole and the Stan's won't seal it...I've seen in happen multiple times.

Well my $2,000 fb machine showed up last week, so you bitch's are in for an upgrade. I am now capable to go retro photo on you're ass!

I think this was New Years eve 1990. My twin brother Mark is in the light gray jacket and I'm in dark gray. My friend Emmett is with us as well. We all lived together after college. I say after college but it was like college but without the school work and exams. Needless to say we partied a lot. Mark was always more over the top then me doe. Every time he came to visit me at school something epic would happen, and I'm not talking about riding a mtb 50 miles with only one water bottle and half a cliff bar.

Stay tuned for way more stupidity.
