Intro
If I could pick anywhere to live in NJ it would be the West Milford area. The lakes are larger, the mountains and bears are bigger, and the weather is a bit cooler. The fact that you have Wawayanda, Ringwood and Jungle all within miles of each other makes this a special place. I guess it’s a grass is always greener thing. Maybe I would miss the flatlands of Allaire and Hartshorne…I’m not sure. What I am sure of is I love the trails up north.
Jungle cat 1 40-49 Recap
This is my 8th race of the year, as usual I make arrangements to cruise in with some teammates to the venue. Me, Clapper and Kirt meet at the DD in Booton and continue onto Jungle. Kirt has the perfect safari wagon, it looks just like the one for the Jungle Habitat logo.
With a10:30 start we have plenty of time to get our reg. numbers, kit up, bullshit with others and warm up before the start. Me, Clapper, Kirt, Falco and 26er take about a 20 minute warm-up then amble back to the start area. We line up in our age cats. And at the sound of the horn we are off.
The really fast guys take off and I am in the back third of the pack sitting in about 14th position. My teammates Kirt and Norm are up ahead of me. Pre-ridding the course twice as well as having put in a bunch of miles over the winter at various trails with lots of rock improved my tech skills greatly from last year.
Utah comes up behind me at the top of Otter and tells me he is leading in the 30-39 cat, I slide over to let him by and cheer him on. Mike Merrit is not far behind Joe and Mike passes me but I repass him a little while later. Mike is a strong rider but is struggling due to the fact that he’s never ridden Jungle.
Even though I’ve ridden jungle more then Mike I still mangaged to fall in front of him at the top of boon before the descent. He asks if I’m ok and we ride on together. On the 2nd lap of Warthog Mike begins to fade and I finish out lap 2 alone.
On lap three I catch a glimpse of Kirt ahead of me in Warthog. He calls out to me to come on and for the next 4miles we work together for a strong finising lap, with me pushing Kirt and him pulling me to the line. Kirt crosses the finish 10 seconds ahead of me, making this my best finish at Jungle ever. 10th out of 22.
