loud motorcycle question

I have to admit I went for the generic little dick at first but I don't have any hate for a true American right to make one of your oldest American built machines with as much American parts. Let your freak flags fly and blast your loud bikes if only for that 3 minutes tops of my last 1437 minutes.

Seriously, complaining to a biker because his bike is too loud? You're getting old and cranky, first symptom. Also, we bikers have a hard enought time as it is with non-bikers, don't go solidifying the roadie-geek stereotype by complaining to Harley guy that his bike is too loud, just stop. And I have a full exhaust and headers on my Gixxer, just because I love the sound it makes at 14,000.

Funny stuff..Loud Harleys don't bother me as much as them loud import cars. Its Tonka truck syndrome.
Pounding bass speakers kinda suck also. Like the people who will leave their blaring music on for you while they roam the convenience store. Oh thank you. I can turn my radio off now.

This is pretty unique to Harleys and hondas....something made loud for no other reason that being loud. No increase in performance, just noise. Brodozers are annoying as fuck also, but I guess it can be argued that they are getting performance gains from ruining their vehicles

Its a free country...look like a complete douchebag on your harley, driving your camo brodozer, or your riced out honda if you wish....Harleys are just the most comical....How can something THIS loud be so slow? I mean they are absolutely pathetic performance wise.

Climbing at the Gunks is what made me hate Harley's so much. You are up on this beautiful cliff in the middle of nature, but all you hear is insanely loud fart noises coming from the road that divides the cliff in half. It's unreal, it's a line of guy with goatee's and oakly's and SKULL PRINT EVERYTHING OMG LEATHER just taking laps up and down that road. I can't communicate with the person on the other end of my rope, I can't hear birds, I can't hear anything. It's just the worst sound in the world. Accelerating and decelerating through that road because there is a 180deg turn through a beautiful setting THAT THEY HAVE TO RUIN WITH THEIR SMALL PENIS.
At least the sport bike guys occupy like 5% of the TIME it takes to ride through. You hear them goose the throttle 3 times and they are gone, and they don't have to insanely engine brake down the hill. Probably because their bike isn't made out of cast iron with drum brakes.
The Harley's you can hear go wide open throttle, and the RPM's like don't change because they are going up the hill and their massive engine makes like no power so it doesn't actually accelerate up the hill, it's stuck at like 35mph and just makes fart noises louder and louder.

yes it's hard to find quiet and solitude, and we are all in each others business to some extend.
Talking to one of the trail forefathers recently, he commented on how loud conversations are between us "mountain bikers".
We shout at each other and try to have conversations while riding, and everyone else in the woods hear it.....then there are the "fails" and cursing that follows. .......but back towards the topic, we are not trying to make noise though I did like putting playing cards in the spokes as a kid.

Yes I've heard hikers complain about this as well

I've been riding for the better part of 30 years. Some loud bikes, most quiet. I don't really buy the loud pipes save lives routine. I feel for most, at least the Harley crew, it's more of a "look at me look at me please look at me don't I look tough and scary look look please...." type thing. No one is better at selling an image than Harley.

However, I appreciate the sound of a good exhaust, even if it's louder. What I really can't stand is straight pipes. A Harley is not my cup of tea, I ride Jap bikes; marvelous little machines full of technology and performance at a great price point compared to a big slow Harley, but I really like the sound of a Harley. The bigger ones, with a stock can, or even a mild aftermarket can sound great to me. It's a very unique sound. I think Harley even tried to patent it, if you can imagin that. But when you slap on some crap a$$ straight pipe, or gut the stock pipe, it just takes all the good out of the sound and makes it purely abrasive.

Now that I tour all day, I can't stand listening to a loud exhaust. I stick with stock cans and buy bikes that have a comfortable amount of power for me stock. But back in the day on older small bore carbureted bikes you could really squeeze a good bit of extra horsepower out of them with a pipe/filter/rejet.

An NJ MC inspection was a joke even when it was done. I used to pass of some dicey bikes through inspection and the only thing I ever failed for was not having reflective tape on my helmet.

Both of my Suzuki bikes are quiet. Ducati is loud, but I purchased it this way.

My favorite Harley sound is the drum opening in Van Halen's Hot for Teacher. That is Harley idling on Drums.

I do understand the appeal of Harley Culture and I hate Get Back Whips on loud bikes.

Loud pipes don't bother me. I think its comical trying to tell someone on a HD that their pipes are too loud...If I rode a motor bike I'd be like what?? can't hear you bitch.

On the road you expect to hear exhaust noise, what I find grating is coming to a stop light and some 19 yr suburban white boy is cranking the lastest gangsta rap out his radio so the people 3 miles away can fucking hear it. We get it, your a badass but not everyone wants to hear your music bro so turn that shit down.

Yes.as a hiker too I get to complain about these G damn airplanes! Everything is nice and quiet and then small airplanes shatter the silence.

Ok Luke's post made me legit LOL about the skulls & leather.

Next time someone revs their Harley at me I'm gonna leaf blower their ass in the shower.

First off, I just bought a lift for my truck. A small one mind you. "The smaller the lift, the bigger your..."😎

But I digress. Loud pipes may or may not save lives but there's no denying they make you aware of a motorcyclist's presence. As someone who a rode crotch rocket for many years, I know how important it is to be seen and heard - especially when you're splitting lanes, going 110mph. Or pulling wheelies on the boulevard in front of group of girls.😵 ...I'm much wiser now.😳

But I di-digress. Most motorcycles come stock with quiet pipes- even Harleys. That loud shit you hear is an aftermarket or modified pipe. People want to be noticed and not always for safety reasons. I like 'em loud and proud but its definitely annoying sometimes, especially when I'm out riding my road bicycle. I can also say the same thing about any car or truck that zooms by me with an aftermarket exhaust.

That's why we go into the woods to get away from all the chaos and noise pollution. 😀

Right, the question is whether or not it affects the behavior of other drivers

I've had bikes fly up from behind me on the highway numerous times. The noise doesnt alert me to their presence so much as it scares the isht out of me as they pass. I see and hear them about the same time... as they're speeding away. This is the azzholes that are doing a buck ten or more and weaving in traffic.

There are occaisions though, where I hear a bike that I dont see... typically this is a guy just cruising in traffic, where I would imagine he is most vulnerable due to blind spots, inattentiveness, etc. In these cases, I think the loud exhaust may well help save his ass. Realistically though, if somebody is texting and/or jamming out to their music loud exhasut isnt gonna do much.

Yes, same as on the hiker and equestrian forums. It is a rare person that can relate to all trail users, same as with just relating to people in general.
Is there a similar argument on the hunter's forum where they're talking about how these damn mountain bikers are so loud and disruptive?
