Bands that should get more respect than they do.....

I love the Smiths...brings me back to highs chool.I think they and morrisey are treated like gods in the UK, little bit less so here.

morrissey was the vocalist for the smiths - so you can dismiss all the other "musicians" - he was, and actually still is, a unique voice. he's a bit of a, no, he is a colossal jerk to everyone around him.
media, other artists - that might have something to do with it.

Elvis Costello - put on an engaging show. if we are working our 80s/90s - he had lots of success, but could have been bigger

Marshal Crenshaw - he wrote many songs for others, peep him - yeah, this might be buddy holly, but it isn't.
kindofa fun fan vid.

then go here

John Pizzarelli - yeah, he is better than harry connick jr (paging @capedoc )

Not actually sure what you mean by this but any suggestion that the greatness of the smiths starts abd ends with morrisey Is just incorrect. Utterly wrong.

johnny marr was the genious behind the music. Morrisset wrote their iconic lyrics. But the music was marr. And as far his musicianship He his considered when one best alt. Rock guitarists of all time and is #51 on Rolling Stones list of best guitarists of all time http://www.rollingstone.com/music/lists/100-greatest-guitarists-20111123/johnny-marr-20111122

vai did not make whitesnake
page did not make zepplin
slash did not make g&r

it was the unique vocals.

Marr 'collaborated' after the smiths.

i'm surprised coverdale/page didn't do better, liked rogers/page (the firm)

Holy shit for real Page did not make Zepplin.
Zepplin wood not exist if not for the pure studio genius. Like Lennon and McCarthany and Kurt Cobain sounds, every single one counted. That's why albums matter once not so much more.
Sorry but Zepplin wood not be because of Plant he was showman not the ear.

I'd go megadeath as a breakthrough before slayer.

Get a calendar. Slayer is a bit older. Kerry king from slayer was actually the tour guitarist on megadeths first your.
Plus megadeth is boring and didn't have nearly as much influence on future music as the other 3 of the big 4

Sorry but we're gonna have to disagree here. What made the smiths was the music (marr), Marrs guitar work!!!!, morrissey's iconic lyrics and unique frontman presence/ mystique. Morrisey vocals were but one part of what made the smiths the smiths.

And as far as post smiths - morrissey post smith stuff utterly sucks with the obvious exception of viva hate.

i just don't think it starts w/o morrissey. they had a good run, and get more play now on siriusxm than back in the 80s! marr left the smiths before the band came apart too.
(i did't know that b4 now, i was drunk at the time.)

spandau ballet and roxy music tried to deliver in the genre, but were missing something. not alternative enough perhaps?

Just beacuse you play an instrument better than everyone or have awesome vioice well does not make good band. I would dare to say almost the opposite is true. Otherwise all great bands should have grduated Juliard.

pizz is a good choice after the deep debates on metal. I saw him once in Newark, you can't really compare him with Connick with the exception that they are marketed in the same genre. Both have wonderful tone in their vocals, I see them more like Sinatra and King Cole

Buffalo Springfield.

Cream
Yard birds
Blind faith

huge talent end-to-end, and most of the members could sing.

Genesis was lucky, phil collins had a unique delivery, when peter gabriel left, or they would have been toast.
mike rutherford did ok on his own for a short period.

----

as an aside, is under-rated mean they didn't hit it big in the mainstream?
Or as some have pointed out, weren't recognized for changing/influencing music ?
