Allamuchy North Conditions

The leaner seemed pretty well stuck up there, so I didn't drop it...will let nature do that for me.

Fyi. Not sure if you knew about these. There are a couple of downed trees near the X in the attached. Been there a long time.

On the Highlands trail? Wow, you'd think a hiker might take care of that! lol

The Salt Shakers (running club out of the old Salt) would have addressed these in the past. The running club rarely runs from Salt anymore since it’s closed.

Started at the tranquility lot. Overall trails are in decent shape. There is a large tree down on the new flow Trail about Midway that will need a chainsaw. Candy ass has a few trees down but mostly it's very leaf covered and getting hard to follow.

Tks for the candy ass intel

I knocked a few out along the eastern side of Allamuchy North today. First I parked in a neighborhood across the street from the Shoprite on 206, to access The Jefferson-Glen Bike Path & Highlands-Jefferson Connector. The Highlands-Jefferson Connector had a surprising amount of girthy blowdowns, but I eventually got ‘em. That whole triangular loop now all clear. Then I parked at the Cranberry lake lot to access 2 fat ones on Wavin’ Willy. The section of the Sussex Branch Trail to access was like 1’ deep for like 50 yards. What a mess. To bypass: Detour onto 206 and drop in from the back corner of the driveway of Wavin’ Willy’s actual house.

I was in Allamuchy North today.... I cleared this monster on the "Unblazed" trail leading to the new flow trail, in the vicinity of orange and Candy Ass. I continued on to sweep Ditch/Cardiac, Friggen Middle, Back to Ditch/Cardiac, and finished on Waterloo/517 trail (white), back to Tranquility lot before I ran out of steam. (Bigger saw today). Several of the targets I was tracking had already been resolved by another chainsaw fairy, but I still found a few lesser issues to tune up.

Looks like that one gave you some trouble? Lol. Was the bar not full depth?
Things went pretty smoothly, it just takes more time. Rolling solo, I can only cut what I can manhandle myself. I had an 18" bar vs a 28-30" diameter tree, so I had to come at it from both sides. Inevitably the cuts can wander a bit, almost to the point of a minor "spiral", so the ends of the rounds aren't perfectly flat or perpendicular to the tree. Which means they don't roll out of the way so easily, they bind up against each other. A few extra nibbles required. Once the first one's out, the rest are much easier.

I love watching the heavy rounds roll downhill like a runaway steamroller, devastating everything in it's path!

On the Iron Mine loop, on the other side of the peak, I encountered one tangled pair of fallen trees with a lot of limbs. Near it was the start of a not very good "go round". Several people complained about it, so it was a priority target. Once I found it, confusion set in. With all the leaves down, the obvious "line" was obliterated. It simply wasn't clear where I should cut. I did the best I could, spent quite a bit of time on it, but I think I did more harm than good. The "inviting" path to the eye might be the crappiest path to bike. I think all I did was create navigational confusion for all following generations. All apologies. I'm hoping in time, the proper line will be burned in. If you happen upon this abomination of a clearing job, feel free to "make it better".

when both sides of the cut are going to fall, i'll support one side with something handy, and angle the cut on purpose so it can fall away.

Successfully clearing something twice as big as the bar is very satisfying!!!!
well done, and TY.
