BB7's-mattybfat?

Never had a problem or known of anyone having a problem with BB7's.
That's "better" to me.

I had an issue with my rear BB7 where I must have smashed it against a rock and the outer plastic adjustment lever exploded. So the outer pad would not lock on and kept coming loose and I'd have turn the dial and tighten it with what little steel post was left on the dial every 30 minutes or so. But at least the brake still worked, sort of.

Right now on my SS, I'm using Hayes MX(?) mechanicals, which just has 1 dial on the inside which has to be adjusted with a allen wrench. Not as adjustable, but more bombproof. Stopping power about the same as BB7, but not so much on modulation.

I had an issue with bb7 too. Usually at the end of winter plastic knobs stopped working because sand got inside. Overhaul of bb7 is such pain... I just threw them away and replaced with new ones and I did that twice. Now I have two pairs of Elexcir 5 and regardless multiple small issues never going back.

I've never owned hydros myself, but I've been on plenty of rides where hydros have failed somebody due to:
1) air somehow gets into the system so the brake ceases to work
2) slightly bent rotor pushes the pads apart so the brake ceases to work
3) somebody mistakenly pulls a brake lever during a tire change, and the pads close so that the rotor will no long fit, leading to much cursing while trying to pry them apart.

Been running and loving BB7 since before they were called BB7 (BBDB).
I use 1 finger on the brakes, and always have more than enough stopping power.

Since discs have become widespread, I've never seen the issues that you guys had with hydraulics, and this includes multiple seasons at Diablo:

1) You got air in the system because someone doesn't know how to properly bleed their discs.
2) I've never seen rotors so bent the brakes cease to work. I've also never seen a situation where even the most heinously bent rotor couldn't be bent back enough to finish the ride.
3) Mistakenly pulling the lever during the tire change? That person should be beaten with the mini-pump because that is noob bush league move.

My 2 cents:

* Lazy people should use hydro brakes.
* Those that actually maintain their bikes can get away with mechanical brakes.

But really good riders need no brakes. An alternate way to say that is that I've actually tested the structural integrity of a helmet before. YMMV.

- Lazy people do use hydraulics. We also ride full FS. I think there's a pattern.
- those wo actually maintain their bikes use hydraulic because it takes actual skill to set them up.

At the end of the day though, your right. The Rules prohibit brake use:

I was the biggest holdout on discs and raced on v brakes up until 2009ish...

That being said, every bike I own now has BB7's on it. Most bombproof, adjustable, reliable brakes ever made.
Those who say they have no power haven't really ridden them, they just need to justify their three-times-the-price hydros.
Fwiw, I run 140mm rear rotor and 160mm front on the SS and have never thought i needed "more brake" ever. Not once.

So since you've been riding discs since 2009, your now an authority on discs? Have you even ridden (not just tried) hydros, vs. most who've run both? Then again, your on an SS so how much braking power do you need anyway.

And what makes you such an authority on discs? Because you've tried both? How long did you try mechanicals? What brand and models have you tried? How many different hydros have you tried?

The implication, of course, being that SSers are slow to the extent that simple rolling resistance is more than sufficient to impede forward motion thereby negating the necessity for alternate means to force cessation of progress -- mechanical or hydraulic. I find that is soooooooo true and concur wholeheartedly with this sweeping generalization.

Oh come on, are we really gonna have this argument? If you really think that mechanicals are better, think whatever makes you feel better. But honestly tell me that your powerball, spare no expense dreambike has mechanical discs..

And I've been riding since cantis, when those Onza cantis were the pimp. I've gone through too many to honestly list, but can tell you that the cheapest hydros I had were better than the best mechanicals.

But you do have awesome balance though, being able to remain upright while moving at such an imperceptible speed, while fighting the forces of both friction and gravity.

Thank you. I didn't think anyone noticed ... or cared ...

Who said I said mechanicals are better? I'm just impressed how passionate you are about this subject.

I just like to start trouble. Shakeup the lovefest every now and then. For a bunch of MTB'ers, some here are way too uptight.
