Chimney Rock Conditions

Well, not to derail a derailed thread…
Was riding Cromwell this morning and there’s a large tree across black like 100 feet from the lot….See below.

Carry on.

This is a shot in the dark but I lost my white insta 360go 2 on the shed trail in Cromwell this afternoon. I know the facinity because it was trying to connect. If anyone happens to find it post a reply thanks. Here’s a picture of the area

That’s a bummer. For the hundreds of times I’ve ridden yellow, I never took the time to go down that driveway and scope it out.

I also found this:
I stopped by a few times, was oddly interesting being where it was. The new entrance seems to be in a bad sight line for those coming up from vosseler. Just drove by it and it's pretty much a blind left turn. A few yards up where miller is makes so much better sense to widen the road if it was indeed an option

Update on the construction. Interesting that the park is so important to the County that so many trees needed to be cleared. SMH. It only looks like it's an access road to the Hawk Watch. Was the need that great?

They must be working to a spec?
Enough room for cars to pass while pedestrians and/or cyclists are on the road. Did they have a choice? I doubt it.

And it might look like hell, but those Russian olive will be back in no time

As someone who has pretty intimate understanding of this piece of land, the whole thing seems misguided

I immediately assumed that someone who lives on miller does not like the constant traffic and this effort was made to appease them.

If you quickly survey the adjacent parcels on either side you can quickly count standing trees in the 100s or maybe thousands in a similar space.

The park is worse off for this effort for sure. Look for more cars, people, vandalizm, trash etc at the hawk watch and surrounding area.

I do wonder if this road then makes new houses easier to build and if that was the plan all along.

As MTBers, we did lose a very small amount of trail and that is not mentioned anywhere. The trails around here will barely suffer the impact of more traffic as they are mostly rock anyway. I do expect to encounter more people in the woods, which I selfishly am not looking forward to.

Not awesome.

Not awesome.

Post Covid has seen a massive uptick in trail use between the Hawk Watch and waterfall. Now pretty much any time of day you’ll see groups of people hiking around there. I always ride that section uphill on the fire road as to not cream any families walking in crocs and pushing strollers on the descent…

That fire road could use a singletrack switchback as an alternative. The whole park is awesome but that one fire road, up to the yellow singletrack junction is my least favorite section. Pretty rocky hillside though. Would require machine work.

Back in the day there was a trail that climbed the ridge in front of the Hawk Watch. You can still see part of it as you go up the fire road. You used to be able to ride all the way out to Chimney Rock Inn.
