Chimney Rock Conditions

Was there today for a few hours. Great day for a ride. Like Kirt said avoid the blue, it was pretty muddy at the top and bottom. Yellow was really good especially the East end trails. They were pretty dry. The yellow interior trail that comes out by the Miller parking lot was pretty bad....really muddy in spots.

OK a little more about the conditions after the winter and that big rain fall

Anything that is remotely fall line has some bit of erosion, especially the older trails. This goes from some to a lot. Tons of new root exposure, big & small gulley’s, loose rock all over the park. Much of this is probably not repairable so I imagine that the line will form to the outside which will make trails much wider. Just the way it is. Spots that get really bad will have to be rerouted if possible. Have to see how things play out with usage and additional storms.

All the newer tails, done within the last couple of years all held up great. 1 small issue on High Tech that could use a little work, otherwise perfect. All the switchbacks on both Yellow & Orange are totally fine other than some loose rocks. Same with most of High Tech, just lots of loose rocks. The new trail we did on Red in December held up perfectly and is surprisingly dry. Still need to remove the flags & tape.

Only 1 tree down that I noticed. It’s on Yellow right when you drop down from the Gilbride parking lot. The Rangers are awesome keeping the park clear! Otherwise just lots of branches/sticks all over the park to watch out for.

The small hand cut bridge that was on White (close to Newmans) is gone. I looked pretty far down stream and saw nothing. Hopefully something can be done there again.

The only real sign people were riding, when wet, is on upper Blue. Lots of tire tracks but in the big picture, no biggie.

Overall I’m pretty happy there is no damage that makes anything unrideable and as a bonus, how dry it is.

With no TM planned until the end of April, I plan to try & get over during the week (probably 1 day a week) to clean up where I can. If anyone is available & wants to lend a hand, shoot me a PM and we can set up a day.

@Kirt the trail on red with all the little orange flag, new? It flows nice.

The place was ok tonight. 95% of the trails were dry and in good shape on red and orange. There were a few trails within red with a ton of mud and ruts in a very condensed area.

I forgot how tough this place is.

I was there today, but not with @Kirt. I can echo what he said, for the most part.

I found blue to be more dry than expected. Like yellow, there is 1 place that is just saturated but it's like 50 feet. Mostly it was fine. I cut back in the middle of the blue loop and did not go down to the stream. So I don't know how bad it is down there.

There is a tree down on that back entrance the way I come in from my house sometimes, off Laurel Trail. @I Ride Bikes probably knows what I mean. Not sure the rangers will go cut there.

White was surprisingly tacky.

Agreed that there is lots of root exposure, some reroutes will naturally happen.

Biggest surprise of the ride - the fence at the intersection of Gilbride & CR Road has been opened up so that trail is accessible again.

I rate it a 3.

Thanks Kirt for the update, let me know you need any help with the planning. This park wouldn't be what it is without you and the countless volunteers

Just went again today. Dipped in the side-with-the-downed-tree and was disappointed that @I Ride Bikes has not cut it out with his Swiss army knife. That stuff behind the ballfields is pretty much golden.

Headed up orange from Gilbride, took the right option at the top-top then left and down into the gully past the damn, and back up the new orange switchbacks for a full outer orange loop. With the exception of the very-top-always-wet log bridge, orange is absolutely perfect. The switchbacks are golden, fantastic work that held up really well.

Then just escaped out the side from there back home.

Solid 3 right now I'd say.
