Commuting

You guys are inspiring me to start my commute in to the Bronx. Think I'll start once we spring ahead. I've got to figure how to get from the GWB to Bruckner Blvd. Guys have any suggestions on how to map that out?

If all goes well when my job relocates to from the Bronx to Manhattan in May or June I'll likely be a regular.

Soundz was a Backstreet Boy he knows how to roll the boroughs. Glad to have the company and it's pretty easy in and out...

The best start is to take a peek at the NYC DOT map.

I commute in to the Bronx, and putting my route together,
I favored greenways/bike paths.

From the GWB, I go Henry Hudson Greenway to Inwood Hill Park-
Then take bike lanes on local roads to connect to greenways that run through Van Cortland Park, along Mosholu and Pelham Pkwy.
If you look at the map, you'll see this is not a direct route,
but maximizes the bike paths.

Not sure where on Bruckner Blvd you are, but if any of this helps, and you want a tour, say the word.

And as noted, Soundz will probably have some good thoughts too.

Awesome commuting fail this morning.

At least it's a beautiful day for a walk home.

i have been inspired by you guys to look into what my commute would look like. Here is what I have figured so far: http://connect.garmin.com/course/753798

The are that I think needs some fine tuning is the area around Roxbury right near Marty's Randolph. Really, from when I cross under Route 80 to Hanover Road. I need to figure out what the best way is to cross Rt 46 and Rt 10. Any advice? I will be using my cross bike so trails are an option as you can probably see I have included some rail-trails where possible.

That is a bummer Spylab, but great photo.

Maybe Jake can chime in too - I did email you with some suggestions...but it may put you on Sussex Tpk...hmmm...

Is this roughly around where you work?

Anything in green is good for bikes (relatively speaking). That part of the Bronx, I've never been to on bike. I'm not sure if I want to unfortunately 😛

once we move in the next couple of weeks, my commute to work will/could include six mile runs :getsome:

I've been doing 26mile (each way) commutes between midland park & SoHo since the fall. Best quality of life improvement I've made...ever, I think.

The route is actually REALLY nice from Rt. 80 onwards.

Follow N. Dell Ave all the way to Rt. 46. I am not sure why it kinks you into a residential area.

From there, you can do one of two things:
A) Follow the plotted route up Mine Hill, turning right onto Canfield Ave. Rt. 46 is pretty low key in this area, and there is a traffic light at the intersection. However, Mine Hill is a pretty decent climb if you want to keep the legs working. If not,
B) N. Dell to 46 again, but slightly backtrack by turning left onto 46, then left again onto KENVIL AVE (there is a traffic light here; 46 is a 2 lane road at this point). Take Kenvil Ave to the end (Main St, which will run you right by my house). Left onto MAIN ST, then in about 500ft right onto EYLAND AVE. There is a traffic light at the intersection of Rt. 10.

If you follow A, Canfield Ave will intersect Rt. 10 at a traffic light. Cross Rt. 10 and keep going till Sussex Turnpike. I don't know whether the trip into the Patriots Path park was your idea, but for commuting it seems like a time waster as these are paved/gravel paths that meander around for a while before dumping you onto roads. Probably a lot of added time if you dick around in there.

I would take Canfield right to Sussex Turnpike (or, in the case of Opt. B, cross Rt. 10 and ride the shoulder of 10 for about 1000 feet and ease onto Sussex Turnpike there). Sussex Tpk is a great biking road and only a 2-laner.

Take Sussex Turnpike all the way until it splits left for W. Hanover Ave and finish your ride from there. Decent paved roads and a pretty direct route.

If you picked the route through Freedom Park, I can understand your idea to get a little nature on your morning ride but it is certainly not efficient for a commute.

My idea was to avoid Sussex Tpk. I don't like the intersection by Sussex and Hanover. I try to avoid it in a car, and thought that was a nice way to do it. I will look into your routes. Thanks for the ideas. My ride home will be all uphill...

Yesterday I decided to mix up the commute, ride my CX bike, and see if the Columbia Trail would be any shorter...I would be riding it from Califon to Flanders, which is about 10 miles of the 17 mile commute.

Nearly collided with a deer at the start...which really woke me up. Ride was good, except there are a few parts that haven't been graded and were like speed bumps...I wasn't moving as fast - took me 5 minutes more each way...

Ride home was a bit breezy...so nice to be outside though.

I brought a bag of clothes/stuff to clean up with on Tuesday and planned for riding Wednesday and Thursday...so I didn't have to worry about riding with a bag or getting stuff to work. I'm lucky that I have a prep room attached to my classroom to store all my stuff/clean up.

Nice Robin first thing I thought when you said you were rolling from Califon I thought nice CT would be a great way in. You got a nice climb too.

Who crossed the GWB yesterday afternoon besides Chris and I, holy shit that was a chore. Literally at a 45 degree angle to fight from being blown off. Can't wait to hear Chris's take with that pannier on the back.

Sleep was little " full moon effect" I suppose, so I ran late and parked at the Hats. Solo and a nice steady pace in, no CP.
