Dragons are F'ing Awesome

there you's is!!! and I just texted you yesterday because I was thinking "hmmm...wonder how Norm is doing" 😀

all I have to say is that Percy Spencer was a genius and watching a documentary about him was one of the things that made me decide to become an engineer.

That and while its been 18 days since you last rode, I looked and its been since October 1st since we last rode together. 🙂

Yesterday

Did manage to get a ride in after work with Andy. First ride of the year - let's hope not the last. We both have a goal not to lose the Winter base competition. I have a free day Sunday so may ride from dawn to dusk and collect on some double points. I can't believe Jake is crushing me in this. It's ok, he will bow down to the reality of beer before long and be a complete waste come spring.

I, on the other hand, drink more wine these days.

Oh, it was freaking cold last night. I looked at the GPS at one point and it said 23.8. Now we know these are all somewhat random numbers, but that's still cold.

And yes, I had spring gloves and summer shoes on. But...oh, never mind.

Numbers

From last year my final numbers were as such:

381 Hours
6000 miles
282 activities

Strava doesn't log trainer time in there though, so the hours are more like 425 and the activities more like 320 or so? Something like that. Garmin used to be better at this stuff but I stopped using Garmin because I was sick of uploading to all 3. Now I just use Strava. Funny, it is by far the least useful training site but the KOM lure is so big that it's the only site I use.

My numbers for Oct/Nov/Dec were way, way down. This isn't a big surprise, really.

Comments

Iggy - Sorry man, but your lamp was thrown away by Andy's landlord. When we were painting the place we were using it to light up the rooms and then he went and threw it away. Oddly, he left the lamp shade so it still has use as a party prop. I meant to take a pic of the lamp shade last night but forgot about it.

Mandi - I told you this story but when Andy told her uncle about me, apparently he said something like, "Is he a Devils fan? Because that would be the worst!" While they are all Canadians fans, she's not into hockey. At least we've never watched hockey together.

People do get wrapped up in numbers, and I really can't put that sort of effort into things much anymore. I'm keeping it as fun as it can be when your GPS reads 23.8. Once the days get longer it will be easier mentally. Last night was tough. My fingers were barely functional when we got back.

Anyway, don't sweat the days off. Just try not to eat too too much butter. But then the last time I saw you, you looked thinner than I think I've ever seen you. So maybe a little butter is ok 🙂

Carson - You owe me a printer too no? I think I'm getting Joe's printer soon, which means I need to go get my baseball bats from the old house. I don't think I'll be changing the thread title just yet, though I guess you never know. Maybe something with Kool Aid in the title?

stb - Are you saying that I'm not drop dead gorgeous? I'm offended that you don't find me HOTT.

xDave - What is an AT-AT?

Jake used to just add his training blog stuff in my thread, and I always told him to use his own. Eventually he did. Anyway, on the contrary to that, I encourage people to post random stories about their life, such as the dog with the reverse beeper. Maybe you could video it next time?

Robin - Hi Robin, thanks for checking in!

Utah - Ok ok fine, I'll ride with you maybe Sunday? I guess tomorrow night is an option but, we'll see. What's on the plate for Sunday? Just keep in mind I'm probably fairly out of shape now. Is there an Allaire ride happening?

Pic

Just one I uploaded today of J from Xmas.

funny you talked about butter. Its one of the foods I gave up when I started riding a lot and figured out it makes me very slow if I eat too much. Since I have lost quite a bit of fat, there are days I crave something buttery. Just a few days ago I bonked, slept, then overate and one of the indulgences was stove popped popcorn with an overflow of butter.

Miyagi, I wait long time for this!

Now, which of my fellow teammates who have also been left for dead on a norm lead rides would like to join in this fun? 🙂

I didn't say you weren't a sexy mofo, just that it isn't enough to get a person to ride in the 20's in a fall kit.

Btw, I went back to garminconnect as my daily upload but will load to strava like once a weekend. My standing are basically static until march, so not gonna bother watching much unless I set my eyes on something.

I just wanted to say thanks for Scrubs funny show. I dont watch much programed TV. To be honest it needs a ball/motor to interest me or make laugh which scrubs does. Been alternating it with Andy Griffith dont ask mid life shit I guess.

Hey we could do the Mahlon Suprise where you thoroughly cracked. That could be good revenge. On second thought Norm did wind up in an ambulance so maybe not that one. FWIW - I am approaching your target weight of 180 - training with my wife sends my weight in the wrong direction. Though I can bang out 100 push-ups no problem and I have much improved jab-cross-overhand right.

I know what this is, left over geek knowledge from reading all the novels in 7th/8th grade- AT-AT

Thanks Chris. Exactly.

Fine, I'll do the Haiku since the bar is low. Updated to reflect his love interests within the forum.

I don't have video but for reference:
(BTW, my wife is small, but not that small.)

I still have your damn printer. I'll get it up there eventually now that you are stateside again.

SWWW

I was riding bikes Monday. We decided it was too cold to ride Tuesday and stayed home and made a stir-fry instead. I'm told by a reliable source* that doing this is actually ok in terms of my desire to upgrade to cat 3 on the road this year. We also had a Bloody Caesar before dinner, while Andy cooked and I sent emails to our former racers and replied to Woody's Wedgie Threat (tm).

* I'm kinda making that up but I think EO would endorse this.

Tonight I get J after work. I went into the city today so I'll pick her up on the way home. I do like going in, but since the storms the Path just hasn't been the same. It takes like 35 minutes to go from Newark to the WTC, which is what, all of 8 miles?

I looked it up. As the crow flies, Newark Penn Station to the WTC is 7.980 miles. Mass transit is AWESOME. It's too bad that we live in Mobile, Alabama and not one of the most densely populated areas in the world. Too bad we don't have enough people to warrant better mass transit.

Utah - take it from here...

Anyway, tomorrow I think I should try to ride my bike. Still need to work out the details. I just posted a clarification on Base Winter scoring. We had the same sort of issue last year, I'm not sure how it was handled.

Comments

Utah - you never know if this old dog has a few tricks up his sleeve! I may not suck as much as you think! Plus, I may have to flatten your tires or stab you even. Bring it!

STB - Happy to hear that you want me still. Weren't we supposed to actually show up for one of the Capers' rides together?

I need to go back to Garmin also. And you're right, not much in terms of KOMs happening these days.

Matty - Good deal on Scrubs, the show is funny as heck. It appeals to my sense of humor but I'm trying not to use the trainer that much. For better or worse that means I'm not riding as much. But this is life. I'll be ok...I think.

And I do agree that it's nice to have a hobby with someone, all except that I'm going to be poor and all that. Unfortunately for me, Andy is the same height as me, so she's likely going to steal half my bikes. But on the bright side, the start-up costs for her to try cross neat year are pretty minimal.

Bill - I'd be up for the Suprise (tm) again one day, just not sure about today. We did that on singlespeeds I think. I guess if I want to be ready for SSAP, I should start riding it. But that's a kids weekend for us, so I'm not sure how that's going to work out.

Anyway, we should ride bikes. I still have your gas cans. Invite us up for dinner or something. Just leave the jab-cross-overhand right at home. Especially if I call you fatso.

xDave - That's a big dog! And hard to argue that next pic you posted.

Jake - Random stories are ok, and I would say they are cool if they have pertinence in some way. But training blog stuff not as much. So if you want to slap your training material here, I say to roll-your-own. But if you read something and it reminds you of something else, bring it! It also helps if you quote something, and then say, "Well this reminds me of..." even if there's no correlation at all.

The post on the winter thread is solid. Stuff like that is good. I approve!

Carson - We talk a lot about getting together but we really never do. Do I need to do a Palooza II? BYO baseball bat?

Iggy - You think maybe Matty should be watching Three's Company instead of Andy Griffith? Maybe a little My Favorite Martian instead?

Q: Is Tom & Jerry bad to show your kids? I let J watch both Scrubs and the Simpsons at times, so you know where I stand. But I want to know what the PC answer is. As we all know, Iggy is the most PC guy on this board, save for maybe almost everyone here.

Actually, I stopped letting her watch them both. I'm not actually sure which is worse for her.

Robin - No need for boxes anymore. But thanks for asking! And if you actually brought me a few more when I see you next, I won't really complain. So you know, sure. I mean, take your time and I'll swap out some of the crap boxes I have for good ones. I have some stuff in the basement that needs packing. Maybe I'll repack some of that stuff...you know, right after I write my congressman and do all the other stuff I never have time to do.

I actually need to finish moving out of my house. Can I get some people to help?

Woody - Bring it!

Back in December I showed up to one and you weren't there, I was crsuhed. It will take awhile to build my level of trust back up to let you back in.

Besides riding at 5 am, then again til 9 at night and then 5:30 the next morning completly f'ed me for the rest of the week. I think you noted a similar thing with your Tuesday double days. It was a good time but I am not sure worth screwing my schedule for a few days. I told Caper's I will come back maybe once when he is ramping up for Bkill so I can abuse him on the hills with my 30lbs weight advantage.

AG show was always on when i was a kid so i seen all episodes lime 1000 times like i love lucy and flintstones. I have netflix and while its good its also really bad. A lot of good shows and movies not there. I did see all of the Munsters again recently which is fing awesome. Loved My fav martian also. Scubs is fucking laugh out loud and i watch it with the kids too.
