Irene. Worst ever?

I just got back from a ride around Cranford. The Rahway river totally flooded a lot of houses in town and 70% of the residents still don't have power.

But I must admit something like this does bring people together. Folks sharing generators, trash pumps, food, cleaning out basements...

As i rode around people didn't have a look of defeat on there face despite the fact that they had a basement full of water and in some cases water in the 1st floor of their house. Kids seem to love it, gangs of kids are riding around on bikes. Without power there are no video games, kids are entertaining themselves the old fashion way...which is good to see.

I've got a video of the river. Walter came to help clean up the deli today but the river wasn't nearly as bad as yesterday. It was bad.

Noticed a Few people I went to high school with or know from town were saying they were disappointed that the storm wasn't "bad". If they went one town over they would have seen what could have been. So much lost. On a positive note the deli lost some paper goods (insurance should cover it) and stuff that needed to be thrown out anyway. Me, my brother and friend were there moving food into the freezer to keep it at a good temp....all the food was saved. Today Walter came at 6:30am to help us clean the basement and get the store back in working condition.

Work was called off today, but I got called to go out to Long Beach NY because my new pumping station was acting up. I think I talked about this before, I know I did at the Allamuchy weekend. It's a brand new untested station.
Anyway it acted up so I drove 2 hours out there to find a float stuck up against a piece of support. Mother fucker, I asked the guy on the phone if all the floats were coming on, and in order and he said yes.
So I hit the float with a stick, and went home. 4 hours driving, 5 minutes work.

Eileen had come over and helped my wife bring all my crap out into the yard to bake in the sun. Took the ladies out for lunch or dinner or whatever 3:30 was and came back and packed up all my crap again.

My camera gear looks bad, real bad. I left it in a tupperware container full of rice and it's still in there. Both my good lenses and all 3 flashes I think went underwater. Fuck.

My trunk full of childhood toys went underwater, all my star wars toys. Old concert shirts from when I went to shows with my wife when we weren't dating and were like 15 years old, but those I can salvage. Lots of magazines ruined, my grammar school and middle school yearbooks. My first pair of Doctor Martin's, this sucks.
Some of it will be fine, some is trash.
My stereo speakers are done, the nice 5.1 surround setup for my PC still has water in the driver and subwoofer, and the transformer just poured water out all over me, so that's done.
Somehow my PC still works, it had water IN it, and IN the power supply, and it was on!

My driveway is full of all the ruined stuff, but that's not the hard part.

WTF do I do about all the wet walls? Thankfully a lot of my basement is 70's porno wood paneling, I don't think that holds much water, but what's behind it? Probably insulation. Some parts of the basement are sheetrock, and the cedar closet. The kitchen cabinets, the bottoms are all screwed up.
Am I going to get mold? In my old house we just had painted brick walls, so I never worked about this kind of thing. This is a finished basement that never got water in it before, I'm going to die of mold poisoning like Ted Nugent.

I'd leave some fans on in here but I'm afraid of Korean Fan Death

Luke,
I am not an expert, but I think you will get mold if you have anything other than block walls. There are lots of folks on here that have gone through this. You will get some good advice.

You have homeowner's insurance?? That is what it is for. Get somebody to come in and take a look and get it done right so it does not plague you for years.

I am really sorry that you and everybody else that got flooded are going through this.

Ruth

Apparently we don't have flood insurance, but they might pay for a service to dry us out and prevent mold. This is when it's nice that the landlord is an 83 year old lawyer, nothing better to do than harass the insurance company 🙂

And really having the gossip queen living upstairs helped us SOO much, as she called all the neighbors to see if they were okay while I was downstairs in a panic trying to remedy the situation and making fun of her for not helping, she found the neighbor with the extra sump pump.

I'm wondering who hasn't posted yet because their situation is so bad, I hope nobody. I hope. I've seen some awful photos online.

Luke,
Here's the definitive clean-up guide:

I hope everything dries out for you. Especially those cameras.

Everybody,
If you ever have to evacuate or have water come into your home, please turn off your main electric. Water, wires and outlets are bad news.

And PLEASE turn off your gas at the main shut off valve. Another flooded house is gone today because the pilot light went out, the home filled with gas and something sparked. Kaboom! And this house was just a mile away in the town next to this morning's fireworks.

Again, very lucky they were not at home.

I charged my new magicshine, and my house didnt burn down, thats a plus

I've got the 816 (mickey mouse lookin' light) with the new battery... so far i've charged it 3 or 4 times with no signs of overheating, the charger turns from red to green and shuts off when it's complete - as it's supposed to. It's been a great light thus far and I'm actually contemplating getting the 808 as a helmet spot as the 816 does a great job for seeing what's in front of me but when i'm real deep in the bush (heh heh heh), i'd like to see what's around me. Unless anyone can name another, less costly, alternative for a helmet mount? 😉

as far as the hurricane goes, my house barely felt it. The area around me, however, was a swimming pool. within a mile in any direction, things were flooded to the max... my parents (who live 1/3mi down the road) and I were very fortunate... i feel bad for the people that have to endure the tragedy this storm brought :\

Luke, sorry to hear about your flood related losses.

I would step up the house hunting. Mother nature downsized your belongings so you will have less stuff to pack, find a home out of a flood zone and a dry basement.

Also I have a Canon rebel camera with an 18-55mm lens on it if you need a camera for the next bike shoot. Its not as good a set-up as yours but your welcome to it if you need it.

Luke, really sorry to hear about this. Water can be so damaging. Thankfully you and your wife are ok.

Luke, so sorry to hear about your damages and losses.
Any hard surfaces I would wash down with bleach. The last of the puddles are drying up in my basement and I can already see mold growing, it appears quickly. Any carpet I would get rid of. Unfortunately that damp smell lingers.

Homeowners insurance usually never covers flood damage, you have to purchase flood insurance separately. Storm related damage is usually covered though. We got rain water in some walls and our front 'porch' so the ceiling and walls have concaved in, we are submitting that as storm damage. I'm not sure if you can try that approach in your situation.

Sorry to see the damage photos here.. Sucks.

We did quite well at my house. A few limbs on trees down and leaves everywhere. The biggest limb was from one of my GIANT willow trees. Luckily, no trees fell. Dry basement and no damage to the house. Never lost power, one of the lucky ones up here. My swimming pool looks like a 14 thousand gallon bowl of soup from the Chinese restaurant, minus the tofu squares.

Our little down town area here in Huntington is still in the dark. I feel bad for all the ma and pa food shops.

I have a commercial grade floor dryer if you can make arrangments to pick up south of the border here. You can borrow it as long as it takes to dry up.

6 inches and counting in the basement right now. No sump pump since the power is out. River is expected to crest over 17 feet tomorrow so the basement is likely to end up filling up completely. Had to kill the main breaker since it's down there. It's likely I won't have power for days.

We'll see if my house becomes an island tomorrow. Either way, it's a complete Effing disaster right now with all the shit I moved yesterday.

Cooking food on my backpacking stove 🙂

Good luck everyone!

I have been off the radar for a few days since there is no power in Lambertville still nor do I have a signal on my iPhone.

Everything turned out fine. I had about as much water in my basement as Jim but the next day, it all disappeared. :hmmm: Where did it all go?

The river did not reach the 17' mark as predicted. I think it topped out at 13'. Therefor no flood water reached my property at all.

Several business an residences in Lambertville were not so lucky.

This Wooden boat was carried to South Union street from The Swan river. It jumped up over the bridge and took out the cement barrier. You can see it resting on part of it.

The D&R Canal path is now completely impassible at Titusville. All the construction on the new spillway has been completely undone. The path is wiped out and the water is draining into the river. The water level looks almost empty now.

The South Bound lane of River Road 29 collapsed into the canal. It's going to be a LOOOONG time before 29 reopens. This really fucked up my commute this morning.

I see that some of you didn't make out so well. Really sorry to hear that. Hope all works out in the end.

damn, great pictures. all that work on the canal just trashed...

Yeah, it's a shame. That work has been going on for over a year now. All gone, bye-bye. I'm curious to see what happens now with that.

BTW, The bottom two pictures were taken by my friend Charles.
