Lyme Disease Thread

The vasoline method is not recomended.

used this method several times, the tick cant breathe and backs it self out quickly, I'd rather take my chances with this then having the tick come apart when its tweezed out

My father had it so bad it gave him Bells Palsy... It is serious stuff

Me too, I thought I was having a stroke. In the mists of enjoying a hamburger I repetedly mashed it into my face. At the time I didnt realize I lost control of the muscles on my left side and could not open my mouth fully. When I returned home that day I whistled for my dog and nothing came out, this is the moment I rushed into the bathroom and looked in the mirror. Holy crap!! - facial paralysis, I went right to the ER, up to then I had never heard of bells.

I just found one last night...SH*T!!!!!! It was in pretty good and I am pretty sure it has been on for more than 12 hours. It was not full of blood, but it had a pretty good bite going.

I am calling the doc today and the health dept. They will check the tick for Lyme, but I am not sure if I mushed it too much.

Needless to say I am freaking out.

I ride in a glaze of vaseline will perform on guillotine.

extra points for quoting ELP in a tick thread that's all I got except I get tested for lymes twice a year myself...so far so good but we spend so much time in the woods it amost seems like a matter of time before we get it.

Go to your doc but (as I believe he will tell you) if tick is engaged less than 24 hrs, there is very little chance of transmitting Lyme. Also, (according to my doc anyway) only about 10% of deer ticks actually carry the disease. Further, according to CDC, Wood Ticks (also called dog ticks) do not carry it at all.

When I find one, I go to my doc and get the first line antibiotic treatment (2 super pills) just for good measure anyway.

Also, be very careful disengaging a tick as mushing it can cause the tick's bodily fluids to migrate into the wound. That can negate the 24 hr rule.

Could anyone with experience give me his or her input? I have not been tested for Lyme but I’ve had the following weird symptoms for almost a year now and haven’t had any luck with diagnosis from the doctors I’ve visited.

- Numbness in my hands and fingers but only at night when I sleep or am lying down.
- Trouble urinating, slow flow and always feeling like I haven’t finished.
- Frequent joint pain in my elbows and shoulders.

One Dr says I might have carpal tunnel. Another checked me, found nothing wrong with my prostate or bladder and said I may just be drinking too much coffee. I’m getting really frustrated cause I feel like I’m falling apart and I’m not that damn old (38) and in relatively great shape. I’m finally going to see a Dr familiar with Lyme Disease next week. I almost hope she does find me positive so I can finally get some proper treatment and hopefully get rid of these problems.

Thanks in advance for any input/advice.

Found my first tick this weekend after a 6MR ride. Was in the shower and this piece of dirt just wouldnt come off. Upon more light and further inspection it was a tick. was probably only on me for less than 4 hours...

From what I hear the joint pain from Lymes is only on one side of the body. I think you are just getting old 😉

Can you give us the cliff note version?
Here you go...

A gripping tale of microbes, medicine & money, UNDER OUR SKIN exposes the hidden story of Lyme disease, one of the most serious and controversial epidemics of our time. Each year, thousands go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, often told that their symptoms are all in their head. Following the stories of patients and physicians fighting for their lives and livelihoods, the film brings into focus a haunting picture of the health care system and a medical establishment all too willing to put profits ahead of patients.

CDC has a good summary of diseases transmitted by ticks that might be helpful. There are many other nasty ones in addition to Lyme.

The CDC advises against the vaseline method. My guess is that the tick is more likely to excrete whatever it excretes when the thing is backing itself out, vs when you're pulling it off.

Wow, you did a good job of making it sound interesting. Now I will watch the full version.

When i found a tick a few months ago, i went to doc and he gave me a single dose of antibiotics (2 pills) right on the spot saying that if the tick had Lyme, that would take care of it. i check every time, those things freak me out.
