Mercer County Park Conditions

Went out earlier than 9:30 over on the West Picnic Area Trails. Made our way through to Hughes drive and cleaned up whatever we came across. Some of the limbs / trees were large, but cleared with an ax and two dudes dragging them. You could tell the trails had been ridden and some go-around trails were naturally created.

The worst we saw was down along Hughes drive and the pics attached tell the tale. It is time for a chainsaw here.

For some reason I cant upload the images. Mod, can you help me out here?

Thanks for your help. We have a lot of work ahead of us yet.
The Mercer JORBA crew managed to clear the blue trail to the boat house.
It took 8 of us 5 hours this morning to reach it. We must have cleared over a 1/2 dozen mature oaks and tons of other obstacles. Very sad indeed.🙁
There was so much destruction we had to reroute 3 sections as well.
My favorite trail on the East side of Mercer is gone...I'm not sure it can be recovered at this point because there is so much down and/or falling.
(The unmarked side trail on the right after the second bridge)

TM Thanks to:
Tom & Karen Swords, Jim & Jarred Wenning, Chuck Prettyman, Mick and Ellen Tormey and Mike Sullivan

Stay tuned for the next TM. We'll need all of the help we can get.

-Mike

Alternate Blue Trail

Don't worry Mike we will get it back after we clear the main trails
It will be a long winter

More Post Sandy TM 11/11/12

Come on out for round 2! should be even more funnerer than the first 😀

We will meet at the rowing center parking lot @ 8:30. The plan is to clear the northern loop of the Blue Trail.

If the early start doesn't work for you we will be easy to find
We will be starting from the trail off of the road leading to the boathouse (South Post Road) Just listen for the chainsaws. 😀

Tools, gloves and entertainment provided, bring a drink and a snack.

See ya there!

Had a nice ride this morning. Haven't been out in a few weeks...just about forgot how much i love riding. Conditions are a bit slow because of the leaves and serious amount of debris on the trail. Most trails are clear with a few still blocked ( we'll take car of some more of it tomorrow)
Lots of new stuff to play on.
Spent entirely too much time playing here:

Get out and ride Mercer County Park! There are now miles of cleared trails awaiting your traffic! Thanks to Mick and the team a lot of work has been done and most of Mercer is now rideable...some traffic will grind up the leaves for us all and make this, once again, a sweet spot for winter riding. Get out and ride! Need a tour, PM me...I plan to be out a lot in the next couple of weeks.....

I will be taking a ride there at 1pm tomorrow (Monday). Marina entrance. I've only been there once so I don't know the trails really. Let me know if you want to meet

Never been to mercer before,How do the trails drain? I plan on riding tom, any trails I should plan to ride, or avoid?

you shouldnt have any drain problems in the trails! the red and blue are fun to ride! just print a trail map before, it helps alot! the marina looks a good place to start/park.

Mercer drains pretty well (despite it's reputation) but it needs a day or two after a good rain this time of year. I wouldn't ride there today, it will probably be soft and muddy in spots, them rutted for the rest of us after your ride 😉

Riding tomorrow, I know it's going to be cold and wet but I will dress accordingly. Since the hurricane I have been slacking and not been getting the 2-3 rides a week as I would like.

It's still raining pretty steady, I'd wait a day or two after the rain actually stops to ride. Otherwise it will be a mess and you risk damaging the trails.
I understand as much as anybody wanting to get out on the dirt. I lost quite a bit of ground after Sandy hit...I've spent the better part of the last month on weekends reopening the trails instead of riding them 😉

yea i know its hard to resist riding after you set the date in your head. But I also find that the trails need a couple of days after rain otherwise they get damaged. I got into the habit of setting my riding days at least 2 days after it rains

but other than those two spots it's in fantastic shape, come out and ride. did 30 miles in there over the last two days and have no mud on my bike! Come out and ride Mercer!
