Post your BooBoo's

A few bullet points before I start:

- The healed scar on the hand is from a gangfight with a vacuum cleaner I had last summer. I had a plate and some screws put in at that time.
- This is the first broken bone I've had due to mountain biking in 15 years. There is a possibility I may have had a stress fracture or two, but never got them checked and healed by themselves.

So I was riding my bike at Dupont Forest near Brevard, NC for 5hrs and it was like 6pm and I decided to stop by the car to grab my light and a jacket because I'd never ridden the Reason Over Creek trail in its entirety before. It's about 3 miles so no big deal I thought. At the end of the first downhill, there is a river crossing and as the trail switchbacked into the crossing area, there was a step down into a creek bed. The smooth rockface underneath was like ice and the front tire slid out and that was that.

The moment it happened it didn't hurt at all. I guess too much adrenaline. I didn't even notice it was bent until I looked down at my hand and started cursing at myself for being so dumb because I knew the crossing was coming up and had to walk anyway. At the ER it started to hurt a bit if it moved by accident. The needle they put in to numb the area hurt like a b*tch.

So next day I saw the ortho and he was like you should get surgery to make sure it heals straight. And I was like maybe let me think about it. Then they removed the ER cast and I saw the finger was still pointed in the wrong direction (spiral fracture) and I was like hell no, I ain't gonna let it heal like that. By then the ortho had gone to talk to his buddy hand specialist and the specialist suggested the pins you see in the photos.

Basically the advantages are that they will come out after 4-6 weeks and he said with the plates and stuff, you tend to lose some flexibility with scarring around the tendons and stuff which I wasn't listening carefully to so not exactly sure what he said. But it sounded good to me at the time so I went for it.

Having been through both surgeries, I'd say the pins are more of a pain to maintain because they don't let you finger bend really much at all. It will be interesting when they come out . Doc said it won't really hurt, but may feel weird. I'll try to get a video.
I had them in my wrist and getting them pulled is hard to describe. It feels like a nail being pulled from wood, but instead of wood, it is your own bone.

Related to dealing with booboos. Any other EpiPen users here? I had a pretty significant allergic reaction to a bee sting a few years back and now carry one. Mine are currently expired/expiring so I'm wondering:
-Is there one that's preferred over another? Not that it's easy to have much of a choice in it, but I've had the Mylan style and the Adrenaclick style, with the latter being a bit more conveniently sized.
-Trying to decide how to carry it. Most of the time when I ride, it's not that far from my car so I don't bother with a pack or jersey with pockets, so it gets stuffed into a shorts pocket which is usually pretty awkward (and potentially awkward looking...).
-I'm very diligent about bringing it, but I can't really leave one in my general gear bag (temp fluctuation) so it just feels like a constant hassle to remember. Where do you keep yours and how many do you generally get? Currently I have two for some redundancy.
-As a slight aside, I've googled immunotherapy for bee stings, and the general impression that I get is that it's not worth it, but curious if anyone has experience.

After a reaction from a bea sting I had I started carrying Xyzal (anti-histamine) that the doctor recommended in my pack. I'd rather have it on the trail to take immediately since the swelling from where I got bit to the parking lot was rather crazy. May even be a picture of me with a lip the size of my fist in this thread.

For the EpiPen expiring, do you know if they totally lose their effectiveness? I ask only because a semi-working pen is better than none. While I'm not probably going to go buy an epipen, someone like me would keep an expired one in my pack, car first aid kit etc as it may be better than nothing. Basically wondering if old expired ones can be semi-useful to give to people to keep accessible.

I was carrying liquid benadryl at one point for that reason, but every smaller container I tried to put it in wound up leaking everywhere. I have some amusing "elephant man" pictures from my experience as well. It was not good, but thankfully I was with someone who could drive me to the hospital and I never had any issues breathing. Minor rash...

From what I've seen, expired EpiPens do not completely lose their effectiveness. I've seen numbers thrown around like 90% out to some months or a couple of years after the expiration date. I'd like to just have a bunch to keep one in the car, one at work, one in my bike bag, etc but they do seem to be sensitive to storage conditions so that doesn't seem to be completely practical.
