Roadie Tips To Stay Alive...

bedminster, whitehouse near rt 78 and a bit north.

haven't heard them in branchburg yet either.

That's interesting. Soil temp is supposed to trigger them out of their "sleep" - you'd think south would go first. Tho I read the hatch may not be as massive as they expected

Ok so here is where I should add a tip to stay safe right?

Use this saying...BE SEEN OR BE HURT.

Countless times I've seen roadies out there pedaling along - practically invisible until the last second!! My advice is to ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS use a tail light and preferably a blinking tail light. There are some really bright and annoying tail lights available at every shop I've ever been to. All are pretty reasonably priced and they come rechargeable as well as those that take batteries.

find it interesting to see non-cyclists' perspectives on cyclists.

bottom line: most hate cyclists.

some of the comments are just downright ignorant (i.e., they think cyclists have no right to the road; that only cars should be on the road)

but some comments point to the fact that we bring the hatred on ourselves based on our on-road behavior (e.g., not obeying traffic laws, unnecessarily clogging up the whole road, etc.).

a sampling of views on a sports message board of all places.... http://rutgers.forums.rivals.com/threads/ot-bicyclists.15303/

its important to understand that if we have ANY chance for drivers to respect our right to ride on the road that we have to do our part to follow the rules and, frankly, not be dicks

they are rutgers fans, what do they know about anything?

Back when Rutgers started to not completely suck at football there was a distinct change in driver behavior towards the Rutgers Cycling team. Instances of honks accompanied by "Go Rutgers" went up while instances of "get off the road hippie" went way down.

I'm fairly sure every single poster on that thread is a Sock Puppet of Terry Shea trying to further erase all memories of his tenure here.

I'm happy that I don't know any of the people on that thread. Though at this point I'm not sure I know anyone on that board anymore, other than Keith & John, if they're even still around.

Fun fact - the poster zappaa is Yogi Berra's kid, Dale Berra. Used to play in the major leagues also.

I couldn't care one bit what cyclists haters feel about us.. As long as I don't get hit, I'm good. If I get hit and it was my fault, I'm an asshole. If I get hit by a maliscious cyclist hater, war will declared, if I get hit by accident, it happens. I just don't want to be permanently injured or dead.

Everyone has an asshole and I surely can't change their opinions. Just don't ride like an asshole.

I care because that anti-cyclist attitude translates into discourteous and dangerous driving around cyclists. that is a big problem as it affects our safety. if there is a way that we can help that (by being courteous and following the rules ourselves) than we should .

Meh, sure we can educate but most people wont listen. I bet most of our significant others don't know how to pass a cyclist properly. I blew a stop light this morning. I am sorry.

this topic is strangely parallel to people wearing helmets while mountain biking.

youre right. unfortunately.

I blew a stop light this morning. I am sorry.

hey, do what you want. I just dont wanna read a complaint on here from you about a driver cutting you off, giving you no room on a pass, etc. agreed?

Running a sign or a light hurts no one unless I cause an accident and is much different than running me off the road. If I get run over because someone saw run a light and was mad about it, fine, but if I get run over on some random road, being that I run lights has no bearing on that situation.

Running a stop sign when nobody is there is akin to a tree falling in the same situation. On that note, if a 1-armed man who dislikes cyclists sees one get crushed in the forest by a falling tree, what is the sound he makes when he claps?

speaking generally, if you expect courtesy and rule following from others (drivers) then you should do the same. if you dont, then dont complain if they dont. simple.

i guess you can just call me George

the problem with running a stop sign and causing an accident is:
that could be the cause of it, but not involved in it........we already have a george...

This is a huge benefit of riding at 5 am. I see ten cars in an hour-and-a-half on a busy day. Some Sunday mornings I will see maybe one. I get my whole town to myself and (hopefully) don't piss off anyone that early.

Now about two weeks ago I chose to ride at night. I was heckled multiple times by young idiots in trucks and cars. Nothing thrown at me but practically got a contact high when one of them passed. That's not just annoying, it's scary.

I know what I am getting into if I choose to ride at night on a weekend, or during rush hour mid-week. That's one of the reasons I choose to ride when and where I do; to avoid people and lower my chances of having an impaired and/or distracted driver pegging me.

was never early enough to ride when I lived in Edison, reason why I stopped road riding for some time
