Roadie Tips To Stay Alive...

I just figured @wonderturtle has to wear a suit on Friday's or something.

I just did a quick ride through Princeton. I stopped at some lights, I rode through some, I stopped and then road through before green at others. Not a single beep or yell.

Speaking of non cyclist perspective.. Just about actual conversation with some paraphrasing as it was a year ago.....my mom says to my grandma, your grandson just bought another bike, but it's a road bike he says it's different. My Gmom responds, "oh god is he going to start riding in the middle of the road like an idiot holding up traffic? I hate them" hah my own grandma... Needless to say a couple months later at a family function I get " wow you've lost weight, what have you been doing" I of course respond " I've been in the middle of the road holding up traffic".... Just wanted to share that.. But it goes to show even family can dislike

I am not talking about running a stop sign or light when no one is around. obviously who cares?

but we all know damn well that there are plenty of cyclists who also think they own the road - e.g., taking up half the lane (when they dont need to), riding three/four abreast (with traffic around), zipping through STOP signs where there IS traffic). IMHO, such cyclists have ZERO right to complain about dickhead drivers. that's all.

Running a sign or a light hurts no one unless I cause an accident and is much different than running me off the road. If I get run over because someone saw run a light and was mad about it, fine, but if I get run over on some random road, being that I run lights has no bearing on that situation.
I disagree. When a driver sees you riding in that way, he/she will think "cycling prick" and perpetuates the attitude of "i hate cyclists"

No denying that. In general they also see spandex, jersey's that say "share the road", bright colored crap, etc and think the same thing. I would venture to say at least 50% of people legitimately think bikes are not allowed on the roads.

That may be true. I encounter it a lot in conversations at work. Most are surprised when I tell the laws regarding cycling. So maybe our NJ government should take a few tax dollars and DO something about it. Like maybe a question or two regarding cyclists on the drivers test. On another note...why do so many drivers today not use signal lights???

NJ does have an active Bike/Ped department at the DOT but I don't think there is a focus on education and if there is, it is on a project level and not a state wide level.

This is all relative to the state we live in... Why are people in this region so damn mean?

I HIGHLY doubt this would even be a conversation in Colorado.

It's a Jersey attitude thing..

I couldn't care one bit what cyclists haters feel about us.. As long as I don't get hit, I'm good. If I get hit and it was my fault, I'm an asshole. If I get hit by a maliscious cyclist hater, war will declared, if I get hit by accident, it happens. I just don't want to be permanently injured or dead.

Everyone has an asshole and I surely can't change their opinions. Just don't ride like an asshole.

Second this!!!

I would say I get honked at when I'm driving my car as much as (if not more) than when I'm on my bike.

Off work tomorrow. Looks like neither Jay's or High Gear have a Monday evening ride. Anyone know of any organized rides in Central NJ that are scheduled for Monday?

Princeton Freewheelers have multiple location they leave from. Not sure if they have anything on Monday. Worth checking out

Perfect example this weekend.

Friday 11:15 am

Making left onto east river road in rumson (that first light after the oceanic). Group of 10 or so riders all dressed in white/black kits with red accents also making left - rather than assuming their place in the column of traffic turning left (the correct thing to do)- some zipped around to the right of the cars - others zipped around to the left of the cars. Totally chaotic and very dangerous. And very very uncool.

THAT is the type of roadie prick behavior that pisses drivers off and as Arwens MOm correctly said, endangers all of us cause it could very easily cause a driver to be less courteous to the next rider they encounter.

If anyone here was in that group ( they eventually went south insea bright)... You suck.
