SLR camera thread

I'm looking for a used one. I've used my bro's before for a couple of weeks. The only thing he taught me was how to use ISO and something else. Something with the speed of the lense or something of something.

Anyways, preferably I would like one that shoots video too. I would like a used one to save a couple hundy but if there is a banging package deal out there I wouldn't mind investing in that. I figure I probably need, the basic two lenses, and a flash.

Any insight? Price ranges for used ones? Have you seen a good deal? What do you know about SLRs?

depends how much you want to spend. also if your bro has lets say canon i would say get a canon so u can trade/borrow lenses. i am a nikon shooter because i just like them better.
for a beginner i would recomend nikon d90 or canon t2i, you can get both for less then $800 used. there are cheaper models too. i would say research or try some out at a local electronics store.

Go to these forums to learn the most about mostly Canon stuff

Go to these forums to do side by side comparisons of stuff you might want to buy, either Canon or Nikon. There is nothing else.

Both forums have robust after-market sales

Go here if you want to buy new.

PS, so far the in-SLR digital video offerings are very consumer grade, i.e. suck. But good enough for hte average consumer.

My step-Dad is in the photography business and he knows cameras. I am currently shooting with a Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5, which he got for me (still and video). The lens is phenomenal and the image quality is absolutely brilliant. I highly recommend it if you're seriously interested in photography. 🙂

PS Bonus: it fits in a camelbak - just don't crash if you're carrying it!!

I'm a big fan of Canon cameras. I use a rebel xsi which I absolutely love. The B&H used store is a great place to find used ones in good condition for a reasonable price.

With regard to which model to get, be sure to research whatever you're considering on dpreview.com.

If you don't need the SLR to shoot video, I'd highly recommend an xti or xsi. The t1i and above are more expensive, have more megapixels than you'll likely ever need (especially as a beginner) and are more complex.
Beware that the camera body itself is the cheapest part of the hobby. Each lens could easily exceed the price of the SLR body.

What do you all feel about those tiny SLR looking ones. The type between the pocket point and shoot and the SLRs? Like what is the purpose of those. Should I forget about a SLR? Do you think I can still capture pics like an amateur pro with all the digital settings on cameras these days.

ATM I am seriously considering the Canon T3i but can't seem to quite pull the trigger 🙄

It depends on your budget and which lens your brother has.
T3i, T2i and T1i are good cameras, and all have a flash built-in so you may not need get a flash at the beginning. Unless you have the budget to cover the T3i plus some lenses, the T2i is not bad, and you can buy some lenses. You can take HD footage with any of those.

Adorama has a warehouse in NJ so you have to pay sales tax. On the other hand B&H doesn't, and you don't need to pay it.

I recommend a 50mm f 1.8, it's around $100. With its high ISO capability, you can take pictuers even in candle light.

I hope this helps.

What do you intend to shoot?

How much are you willing to spend?

How much time are you willing to invest to learn to do it right?

Let's start there.

*No, you cannot capture pics like an amateur pro with all the digital settings. Those are the opposite of amateur pro.

Shoot sports, lanscapes, mtb biking, make hd videos

Spend 800 ish. I already found two deals for the t3i with lens. 650-750...

Time. Not too much but learn enough to impress. Thats why I favor the t3i. Its supposed to have a built in guide
