SLR camera thread

Hey Jake. Well, if you're not in a hurry, check slickdeals like every day. A T3i package deal is bound to show up every couple of weeks. I like having a zoom lens in addition. Especially, if your sideline at a game. I would really like a 135mm lens to do it all and of course the nifty 50 too. I don't think there is anything wrong with getting a bundle to start before pouring thousands into another hobby.

I've used the T3i for many joyous occasions. I fully exploited this camera on my vacation last year and I was very happy to have it. I'm no manual freak. Most of the shots I take happen so fast and unexpected. I don't really do photoshoot days. I grab and it and go. The sensors on the camera and auto settings are very good. I have taken manual shots though and just about everything is adjustable on the T3i. Many low light shots at weddings and much better than the point and shoot. Great camera before getting into full frame price. I've even recorded a friend's wedding in full HD and they loved the video. After I finish my office room I really hope to get more time with the camera and editing my year of stuff. The one complaint I have is the size/feel compared to a full frame. The full frames feel better because of the larger size BUT they weigh a lot more too and double the $ too. The T3i suits my needs and budget.

I've been meaning to take it on some rides but my bag isn't big enough. Maybe if I had the nifty 50. But I'm afraid of busting it with the 'stock' lens. Looks to be a spectacular weekend. Maybe I'll bring it out.

Just pick up a T2i with points. Cant wait to start playing with it. Anybody have any issues with using lens adapters. I have two AF Pentax lenses that I would love to use.

oh for sure. that lens is like $1600!

Not sure if you looking at the right picture, but it's $121.35 for the 50mm F/1.8. It's a solid lens for that price but you won't get any zoom. I would get that lens.

The kit lens is ok, esp if you get a deal on the package. Don't expect any significant background blur or acceptable low-light usage. You'll get acceptable pictures in sunlight or with proper flash (not the pop-up flash). You just have to understand the limitations and stay within those parameters. With post-processing you can get excellent photos with that lens.

cool, thanks manny. i'm in no hurry at all. can you recco a site or two?

so from what it sounds like, a nice 50 and a good 135 will have me covered? you're dead on with the "sideline" thing. with my kids getting up to the age i'll want to have that covered. plus my nephew is a lax goalie and i need to start building a library of him playing to send off to potential schools...so i guess the HD video thing will also come in handy.

really? maybe it's the wrong lens then. i copied/pasted that directly from Canon's site. i did see this lens too: Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS SLR also which is pretty much that price.

Oh you're talking about the F/1.2. Yea that's $1600. The F/1.8 in Martin's link is $121.

so my dad has an old canon AE-1 with some lenses. i know he has a 50 and maybe a 210 or something, a few filters and some other stuff.

my question is, would these lenses work with the canon t3i or 60D? they should, right?

i'm not 100% sure, but if they did fit your camera i'm 99% sure you won't get the autofocus feature you would from a modern lens - not that this is a deal breaker, but some1 better informed than i can tell you if they fit

No, the AE1 has an older style lens mount not compatible with the EF mounts used with newer cameras.

that wouldn't really bother me too much. i like being able to do the focusing on my own

thanks but....DAMNIT!

so stupid question #2: is there anyway to "convert" them or is this a lost cause? it just sucks b/c i know my dad bought good stuff and i'd like to use it. i guess i could ebay the whole thing and use the funds from that to get some new baller stuff.

A quick google search suggests there are adapters for this purpose (FD lens to EF/EF-S mount body), but not sure how well they'll work.
And at $30 or $50 for an adapter, that might be better spent on a lens.
Also this is sorta like mounting some sweet steel coaster-brake rims on your carbon scalpel.

Ready for more bad news? Don't expect a lot in terms of selling the old cameras. I did some surveying, and have been amazed at how much my 35mm stuff has depreciated.
Exceptions to this are collectibles- you might want to see if there is an AE-1 user group out there, that might be your best bet for a good sell.
Happy Monday!

Just got my T2i today. Couple of questions for the camera pros out there. I am a computer geek so tech spec I can understand plus I know about the google. I will mostly be taking pictures of my family in all sort of predicaments, hopefully to move up to more personal type of photographs (outdoors, artsy or non family) later

RAW or RAW + JPEG or JPEG only.
What attachment should I get first? lens filter, external flash or maybe something I have not thought of
A good book to learn photography. I do have access to Sarfari Books online.
I do have a couple of Kaf type lenses, does anybody have any good/bad things to say about the adapters for this?

Raw only, 14bit depth. I don't know cannon, if it goes higher bit depth go to the highest, memory is DIRT cheap now.
Your first accessory should be Adobe Lightroom
Consider .jpg as a "print"
Yes you can edit a .jpg photoshop but you are editing the entire image at once with say, toning back the amounts of reds that show up in your photo.
In raw, you really have access to the ingredients that make up your print. So you can access just the reds, or blues, or shadows with much much better results.
But what I find is that the jpg clips off all the stuff you can't see in the fringe blacks and fringe whites. Which is fine for looking at the picture, you cant' see it anyway. But if you have it open in lightroom, you can actually bring parts of the photo "back" out of the blown out whites or ultra blacks. There is stuff in there, but you just can't see it until you try and access it. And it could save your picture! In a .jpg, that stuff is gone, no chance to recover. I use it ALL the time when I blow out someone's face with a flash. It looks totally white but I can actually get their face back using lightroom and using the recovery slider, which brings stuff back from blown out whites.
But jpg makes a smaller file.

I'm terrible at portraits and landscapes, but being the resident action photography guy I must point out that I don't own any filters or photoshop.
But it's probably why my portraits and landscapes suck.

http://www.adorama.com/

I dunno, I go wherever it's cheapest haha But that one is pretty popular and good CS. But I'll keep my eyes peeled for you. Do you have a local photography store? Those guys are really good. And you can try it all and have everything answered on the spot. Like a LBS 😀 the one closest to me in Princeton even sells used lenses serviced by the manufacturer.

"wherever it's cheapest" is not a good idea for photo equipment. There's way too many brooklyn bait and switch shops out there. If you actually receive what you ordered, chances are it's the Japanese version with a manual you can't read and/or grey market warranty issues. If something like slickdeals doesn't work out for you, go with Adorama or B&H. Their prices are almost always as low as it gets other than the shady online shops.

I never used the adaptor either, but I whether you want to try it kinda depends on what FD lenses you have. If you have a really awesome L lens it might be worth a try for $30 or even $125:

so then don't use that site? i'm confused (damn, that's happening a lot the last couple of days).
