Tariffs...what to make of them.

Did the seller not do DDP shipping to cover the tariffs? Or did you pre pay and get hit with him anyways? I'm about to order some chinertown wheels and they swear there's no added costs with DDP but I'm still skeptical.

This is from France so I’m not sure what other places are like. I ordered a chainring from the UK and got a bill from FedEx a few weeks later. I haven’t ordered anything from China yet. Well, except from Amazon where prices have been the same…

That’s nuts! For BMW, I go to BimmerHub in Westfield. Top notch service from ex-BMW master techs. Prices that are half (or more) of dealers. Example: Morristown BMW wanted ~$500 for a differential fluid change. 😳. It’s literally open the plug, drain and refill. Bimmerhub charged ~$150. Ask for Joe (owner), Mike or Lenny (service advisors).
I went to school with the owner of morristown bmw's daughter. they weren't hurting for money in 95 and I am sure they aren't now,

From what I've seen over the years when I was ordering car parts, generally no. If you are a consumer importing something, you pay the import duties. UPS used to bill you after-the-fact, but it looks like they have gone to the system I've experienced with DHL, who didn't release the shipment (from New Zealand) until the import duties were paid. I was able to do it all on my phone, so it was pretty easy. Of course, at the time the import duty was only 2.5%, so it wasn't a lot of money. I think that was also the reason for the under $800 exemption. At only 2.5% the administrative costs weren't covered by the duty fee. At what looks like 25% + admin costs, it's a different story now.

Jesus. F'ing children. I'm embarrassed for them.

I'm 'on vacation' now. Gov stopped paying our bills, we ran at-risk for a while, now I'm furloughed. I can either sign up for unemployment or use my vacation until I run out, which will be about a month. That's what I'm doing. Aside from getting paid in full, it has the advantage that if/when I'm called back I can start immediately while furloughs occur in full week increments (I'm not sure why).

As an aside, in NJ we are eligible for up to $900ish/wk for 26 weeks. My friend in FL is eligible for $275/wk up to 12 weeks and they're notorious for approving you but not actually paying out. You get the government service you pay for, I guess.
