The 2018 Winter Olympics Thread

I was best at slalom. I just plowed through the gates.

I never had the right equipment so my hands always hurt too much after slalom. Though I did learn what it's like hitting those mesh fences at full speed during GS once... that was lesser fun

Yeah, this is fun to watch. The first 2 runs were awesome then almost everyone ate it after that in some way.

What is this called? Women's freestyle ski slopestyle go backwards a lot. These girls are awesome.

Caught up on the boarder cross today, that's some crazy shit, looks every bit as dangerous as the half pipe to me anyway.

@seanrunnette I take it these quads are harder than back flips when they were legal? Were they doing quads in the 70s?

Just checked-the first quad landed in competition was 1988 by Kurt Browning. And yeah, they're wicked hard. As for backflips, Bonaly landed one in Nagano - as punk rock as skating gets: they've been illegal in competition since the early seventies.
More on quads. Since they've got such high value as jumps, they're indispensable in modern skating. Rippon did great, but his triple toe is with 10 points. A quad toe is worth 17 or so. And if you blow it, the penalty is 4 or 5 points, so you're still ahead on points. Nathan Chen, who had a disastrous share in the group competition and another terrible outing in last night's short absolutely killed it tonight in the free (they get two skates - short and free). He landed 5 of 6 quads. Boom! Never been done. And the rest of the program was great, too. Quad fueled redemption.

Too bad it doesn't let him fly farther.

Ladies biathlon is on. This is one of the coolest events.
I wish I had the leg strength and endurance of biathlon folks.

So - if one more athlete says i'm happy and i did my best coming in 15th place (or worse) after making a huge mistake
i'm going to stop watching. how about the announcers saying that "they'll make a trip to the team's sports psychologist to
get straight, and come back tomorrow"

this is the result of the participation medal generation. I'm happy that i didn't win. Yeah, i've won't 8 of the last 11 races, and
the world championship the last 2 years, and was a heavy favorite, but i did my best.

throw your skis, start swearing, say you sucked, and your are disappointed with your performance.
say you let your team and family down by not having your best performance.

/rant

unless you want to talk about the men's curling - what a let-down. it was there to take, and they just missed.

Meh, I prefer those athletes who remain in good spirits. Saw some dude throw his skis yesterday and it made him look like a child.

cause you are a millenial - or gen x....

ok, maybe throwing equipment is bad - but being happy with a performance below your expected level is just a result of not being able to be critical of anything.
except not being PC.

Well this goes both ways. When we were kids if you lost and complained they called you a sore loser. Now that they’re not sore losers they are soft.

Honestly I think they’re just trying to make the best of a lousy performance. They know deep down they dropped the ball. But they also know the a single wrong word will get them put on a meme with Hitler.

So it’s kind of an unwinnable situation.
