The Indoor Cyclist's support thread

Like @Patrick said, you can chat over a Discord channel. The text feature gets annoying fast because if there's a large group ride nearby, you see everything going back and forth, and most of it is absolute nonsense. Not sure if you can turn that feature off - I never looked into it. I do randomly throw out lots of Ride Ons using the companion app - I think they need to work on the companion app features a bit for sure. You can re-center yourself by clicking on the compass, but you kind of have to quite a bit because the slightest brush on the screen pushes you off-center. And there seems to be a certain randomness to the Ride Ons it gives - not sure if you can adjust this or not, but it gives only 5 at most when you click your circle and I have absolutley no idea how it chooses which five to give them to if you're in a larger crowd. There are a few times when I really would love to turn off a few other features as well - like the one that tells you to close the gap or the sprint sections. I've spent my entire cycling life treating almost every rider I see ahead of me as a rabbit to chase down, so when I'm trying to do an easy ride on Zwift that's the worst thing for me. I just can't ignore it. So I'd really rather not see it sometimes. But all that said, I still prefer it to staring at a wall or a moving bar. I could do other TV shows, but I don't really miss that when I'm riding.

I'm really surprised @UtahJoe could stand letting those dots ride away from him.
For me...really...The trainer is burning calories and easier workouts.....I think the trainer is a good thing and has its purpose....and some people who are not me can do their best work on the trainer......But the real deal, I just need to be outside. I just cant get motivated by virtual races. I dont know whose in them, if they are cheating, what does it actually mean to win one, etc......my brain wants all this information if I am going to unlock full utah race power. Whatever I do when I actually race, i have never been able to replicate in training....I think its @Norm s voice in my head reminding me that im a fat loser. id say closest thing inside.....I have done Kate's class at jalapeno (in person) with @muddybike a couple of times and that got me motivated...I really enjoyed it actually.. But now its all virtual and on zwift 🙁

Zwift Training Plan -

I dunno, maybe this goes in its own thread?

4wks until vacation, and there is a 4wk plan on zwift - may or may not be the right one,
but any plan is better than no plan?

I did an FTP20 test and zwift used 95% as FTP - I'll do a ramp test in a couple days, just to get an idea of relative accuracy (??? sounds reasonable)
(thanks for the idea Ian)

I've been to spin classes, with the perceived effort - various videos, and scrolling graphs indicating various blocks, loud music with appropriate tempo.
The bikes had cadence, but not power, so who knows. I remember sweating a lot cause of the limited airflow.
I also remembers I was the only one with dirt on the SPDs!
Anywho, the point was to show the zwift training setup after 1 ride, get a little feedback.
Esp compared to other training platforms.

Setup
40" tv on a rolling cart (you know, middle school A/V nerd stuff - brings back memories)
Apple TV series 4 running the zwift app
Iphone mounted on handlebars running companion app
Kickr, Chest HRM, Cadence

The Iphone screen has a bunch of info - Easily see workout progress, and what is coming.
Without the actual Zwift app running on the TV, this would be all that is needed?
Any glaring omissions ? (yes - the lack of fitness is missing !)

IMG_1447.PNG

Looking up at the Zwift App screen on the TV, provides the same info sans power gauge, plus some visual cues.
The red bubble/gate in the distance is the start of the next block (is that the right word?). It is colored red to indicate a harder effort is coming.

From Zwift - the gates are colored too - A gray block is zone 1 (recovery), blue is zone 2 (endurance), green is zone 3 (tempo), yellow is zone 4 (threshold), red-orange is zone 5 (VO2 max), and bright red is zone 6 (anaerobic). The curvy block is a “free ride,” where you can ride any power or cadence you want. The “warm up” and “cool down” blocks ramp up or down in intensity. Use these at the beginning or end of workouts, or try adding them in the middle as ramp intervals.

It is time based, changing speed will move the gate. Cadence and power cues will flash when off-target.
Current block progress bar is above the power number.

All the rest of the Zwift stuff is there, but interacting with other riders/terrain is turned-off.
No drafting, no wind, no climbing (not that there is any in Richmond), no power-ups.
The workout does earn XP and Drops.

Looking at the 'zwifters nearby' list - anyone with a phone icon is using the companion app,
anyone with a bar graph is doing a workout - in case you all were wondering.

Overall workout progress bar, time remaining, and current block are top left.

There are some audio cues indicating that a change is coming a few second before the gate.

Important 😀 - While doing this workout - which didn't take much effort, most of the time was spent watching TV.
I finished Dark and still don't get it, so i have to watch the last two episodes again.
In lighter viewing, season 4 of Better Call Saul seems to do it.

The show lasted longer than the workout,
so Zwift transitions back to JRA - with the game stuff activated. Finished-up with an extended cooldown,
and one half-assed sprint (i didn't stand) -

Ride report at the end looked like the plan...given the intensity (or lack of) my HR barely moved.
TSS seems right - endurance level.

Note cart, and eero. TV is set at height that does not require breaking my neck to see.

Hey, here is a question. The kickr seemed slow to respond - I'm running big ring, with a straight chainline into the cassette.
Is there an advantage to having a lower RPM at the "rear wheel" when training (erg mode) to make it more responsive to changes?
Some of the posted TR reports appeared to have flatter power results? Perhaps it was just the lower power that it is asking to produce,
which means fluctuations are a larger percentage?

I do have a 100" screen and projector down there. 🤔

Yes, any plan is better than no plan. The most important thing is to follow and do the workouts. Make it a goal to not miss any of them. (If you miss 1 or 2 it’s not a huge deal but still try not to).
If you have a hard time completing them, turn the intensity down. Just commit and do it. Go go go!

Don’t blame me when you overdo it
I think I’m going to do this short base, the polarized one, and then see what happens after that… I don’t even know what events I’m doing this year so it’s going to be interesting lol

Oh, that means you got lots of freedom. Play around and see what works. I’m curious how the polarized plan will work for you

I pretty much did one when I followed Dylan’s gravel build plan, there was some long hours in the weekends though.

3x45m tempos, 4 hour rides where you do 2x12 at FTP, do 3 hours, then do another 2x12, that kind of stuff

So first of all, here’s my setup. Kreitler compact rollers and a small fan, parked next to the wife’s Peleton which has been used 5x in the 6 months we’ve had it. Large screen tv, but I gave up on watching shows that aren’t hockey. I wear a set of headphones and listen to music.

So I was about an hour into a ride listening to "Siamese Dream" and having my moment. My son was watching some stupid YouTube video of some jerks talking and texting over a Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Hey! Did you know Sylvester Stallone was in Guardians of the Galaxy? Rocky! ROCKY, BABY!! THE Sylvester Stallone? I didn't know that so I was shocked to notice him up there. How shocked? Enough that I lost concentration and veered right of the rollers. Did I say right off the rollers? I meant left off the rollers. I didn't even see that I came off, cuz I was too busy looking at Sly Fucking Stallone as an extra in a superhero movie. I just felt a sudden sense of disorientation and movement.
Next thing I know, the Peloton comes at me from the left like Peter Sagan in a sprint finish and throws an elbow to my ribcage. I wobbled to the right and then overcorrected while track standing and toppled into the Peloton. Selfishly, I prioritized the safety of my own bike first, then that of the Peloton. Obviously I put myself last because my back has big scratches and a rug burn mark on it and I cut my knee open on something or other.
My son was startled enough that he ran out of the basement. My wife ran down the stairs to check on the Peloton. My little girl told me that I probably needed to take some time to rest. I did another 20 minutes until the throbbing stopped and hung it up for the night. Most importantly, the bike is fine.
Can't wait for warmer weather and dry roads.

Rollers and watching anything with Jackass in the title don't end well. Ask me how I know. Glad you're ok.

My wife had never seen someone ride rollers and came down while I was on there and waved her arms to get my attention to try and tell me "that doesn't look safe". Needless to say I'm glad the bike was OK. The first words out of her mouth after I untangled myself from the clothes rack and she stopped laughing were "you're the only peson i know that should wear a helmet in the house".

Wheel on tacx flow setup. I saw a random post online about a DIY wood zwift table. Built a similar table out of scrap set the height of the bottom shelf to just clear the ipad. Mounted costco sale TV from the ceiling. I am planning to mount a fan with remote on the table cross brace, but haven't done that yet. Also thought about upgrading to a tacx neo, but haven't been able to justify the expense yet. Lots of issues trainer flats when i first started out. Now as part of the normal zwift ritual, i always pressurize the tire to 96-psi before starting and haven't flatted since the last time i didn't set the tire pressure before a ride.

And most proud of the great covid basement cleanout of 2020

Normally just spin. Sometimes i watch TV. Sometimes I chase whoever is in front of me. Sometimes i join scheduled rides. Based on discussion above and other threads, signed up for the build me up program yesterday and that will begin Monday. Set my FTP based on my strava 6 week power curve at 95% of the 20min effort and see how training program goes.

hell my neck would be killing me looking up there!!!

speaking of which, my out-of-shape condition had rendered my handlebar drop a bit aggressive -
Gotta get a riser block - i think a spackling bucket would do at this point.

I'm with Pearl on that. Do a ramp test.
