The Not BIYF February Ride Thread

I am pretty confident riding on ice with studded tires, but there were quite a few butt-puckering moments out there today on some of the downhills. It was fun nonetheless. The pictures don’t do the iciness justice. I was able to see myself in the reflection of the ice through most of the ride. There was a whole bunch of sticks that I was able to clear off the trails and some downed trees that I was not.

Guess I’ll be crossing CR off the ride list for this weekend! Thanks for the intel.

Some Ice Some Nice
Haven’t been to Baldpate in a few weeks due to a combination of trail conditions and closures for hunting (which Hunting is now done for the season). Was unsure how much ice there would be as the ridge gets a lot of foot traffic that packs the snow down. 1 min into the trail find the first downed tree and one shortly after, they will be quick to clean up but awkward climb overs until I get to it. Coming out of the creek, the lower part of the climb in a mess with ice and frozen leaf dams but about 1/3 of the way up it is better. I go up the steeper trail option and happy to find only some big branches down, which i remove.
The sky was purdy today.

The trails were even firmer and more magical today. I rode some of my favorite stuff and then popped out onto the reservoir and explored the big island that I haven't been on in like ten years. Then I made my way back along the shoreline and did some off-piste exploring all the way back. So awesome, even though I did end up getting my feet very wet near the end.

After a much needed day off yesterday, I decided today's training would be a Zwift race instead of just a structured workout or JRA and collecting junk miles. I found an event that fit into my lunchtime ride schedule with enough time for a warm up ride and then a short cool down ride, resulting in 3 separate ride postings.

Warm up ride:
0:26

Race ride
0:52

Cool down ride
0:10

I don't do many Zwift races but this was a pretty good workout for 50 minutes and forced me to pay attention, while making the time go by pretty quickly. As with most of these Zwift races the category range is more like a suggestion, since the 2.5 w/kg cap wasnt enforced and the guys that won were way above that- which honestly I dont really care about. It got the job done and I got a nice bump again to the infamous FTP score while placing 12th out of around 47?

I got a new battery for my chainsaw and was itching to try it out. Went to nesh and cleaned up two trees on one trail and the ones in the picture below on another. While clearing the one that was waist height, I bent down to look under the tree and a spice bush branch pokes me in the eye but didn't think much of it. Finished up the tree (which I had a rare bar pinch that I was able to unpinch with a large branch) and did a few more trails and picked up sticks.

If you wonder why I stayed out of the woods on monday with the winds...the left part up to my gloves was in the ground like a spear.

When I get in the car, I look in the rear view and notice my eye, ugh wtf. Feels mostly normal but i will reach out to the eye doc just in case.

Damn, hope it turns out to be nothing. Don’t forget that PPE next time!

Yikes!! Please be careful!

One comment I've heard about electric chainsaws is they don't stall as easily when bound like a gas saw will, so you need to be extra careful when using one.

-7 on a beaut of a morn
Had planned to scope waco conditions/trees down but felt like more of a clean up morning. Drove for 10 min before i remembered i didnt get my saw so got out late. Hit baldpate and got 5 different spots. There are a bunch of leaners around that will be a mess when they fall. In any case, cleaned up all but one known one on the backside. Started rolling up greenway and there was a downed tree within 100’, then the second one on the skinny bridge, which i addressed both. I didnt go any further up so may be more down.
