Unlock My iPhone?

I didn't go, so the specifics are not entirely known. But...

The guy at T-Mobile took his SIM card and put it in the old iPhone. All I know from there is that "it didn't work."

I thought that in theory you could take an active SIM card, plop it in, and it would magically work.

Is the phone activated though? This is the steve jobs nonsense I'm talking about. Put your sim card in it and see if it works.

Yes, my SIM card works in her old phone.

I imagine that means it's activated?

yeah, damn. wonder why it's not working for you then. I have no experience with unlocking though.
try google.
don't give up!

The iPhone not working on a different carrier doesn't have much to do with Steve Jobs BTW, more so the carrier. Every GSM phone that I ever had was shipped with a carrier lock enabled. I've used at&t/cingular and voicestream/T-mobile and they all did the same thing, I've had Nokia's, Blackberry's and others and they were always locked OTB.
Blackberry's are a PITA to unlock. As an example, If you have a Blackberry from AT&T, they are the only ones that can give you the unlock code which is generated using the device ID.
No other carrier can get the code so, your up a creek without their help :-( (T-mobile and AT&T have both helped me)
I always tell them that I'm going out of the country and want to use my phone when I go and they always help me.
Not sure about unlocking an iPhone but does AT&T have an opinion on this matter since you only want it unlocked so you can use the phone out of the country and not just to hack it?
Has anyone asked?

Yeah, my wife had to go back for a week in January and we ended up having to drop $30 for the 5 days on the ground just for her to have basic phone service. It was something like 20M of data which might get me to lunch on the first day we're there. I don't remember what it cost, but the calls were still expensive.

WOW look at this thread!

Anyone request unlock with AT&T recently. I'm nearly going on two weeks and still says "inprogress". Site says takes up to two days. Chat said it's a waiting game basically.
