Verizon Droid

Here is an interesting chart that compares features and real cost of the Iphone, Pre and Droid. These things ain't cheap.

Could this possibly be accurate? An iphone does not multi-task? I am able to listen to music, surf the web and download large e-mail at the same time with my BB. The i-phone cannot do this???

It can do this, if you're listening to your iPod. If you're listening to Pandora, no. Non-Apple applications will either be ON or OFF. You will still get notification of a text or email in any application, but if you reply to the text, it stops the application.

It's not true multitasking though. It's "apple-approved multitasking".

Sorry to be all vague and then MIA. So yea. I am a VZW employee. I work in the Lab that certifies devices before they can be sold. There aren't really any more secrets so i can spill it. I just have to be careful what I say. Dont bother asking me whats in the pipeline.

So basically I used this phone for a few weeks, and it was by far my favorite device. There's an enormous amount of "apps". (seems to be the flavor of the month these... "apps").
The camera is sweet. The touch pad is never given a second thought, and despite what some reviews may say, the keyboard is top notch.. and i have big fat fingers.

Its worth it. Go buy it next week.

I won't ask...I know this industry way too well. I'll just do what the rest of us mobile nerds do and wait for the BGR Ninjas do their dirty work. 😀

Does it fully support BES? If not, can you unlock the GPS on my Curve 8330?

but yeah, if you have an iPhone you're already at the top of the mobile device food chain. the first gen droid phones, while coming close, will not meet the successes of the iPhone. not yet, anyway. like i said, apple has way too much head start.

This is actually the 2nd generation of Android. I never used the first version, but I hear 2.0 has come a long way.

The fact that it is an open source OS will do alot to catch the iPhone. I would love to see the improvements made from droid 1.0 to 2.0 and compare them to the iPhone OS improvements in software releases. I'd wager the droid has made up more ground.

I don't think anyone would argue that the latest OS releases on the iPhone have been less than spectacular. They have been buggy and made my phone do sh!t I've never seen. I know the open source is supposedly better than sliced bread but I freely admit I don't know all that much about the open source v closed argument. All I care about is that there are more smart phones in more people's hands and more ways to develop relationships with them.

Ultimately it won't be a device game anyway.

Is VZW taking pre-orders? I don't want to battle the masses next Friday. I'm thinking this phone will draw a crowd....

Im really not sure. I stay away from sales and plans as much as possible.

As far as open source, it will be cool to see different manufacturers come up with their flavors of the Android OS.

I've been playing with the Droid all day. Best... verizon... phone... ever.

Geez, maybe I should've stood in the line at work yesterday...they gave away a couple hundred of these things to employees via one of those three-claw arcade machines. Myself, and my family, just upgraded a month ago and I didn't think it was worth the time standing in line....

Keep playing around with it. It gets better.

if you notice the battery dies really fast, its because you are using it alot... not because its a shitty battery 😀

I've found that I use the on screen keyboard more than the physical keyboard.

The Maps and Latitude is awesome. Especially now that alot more of my friends have the device.

Watching Youtube on this screen is awesome too. I think i could watch an entire movie on it and not be bothered at all.

The Screen resolution compared to the iPhone is like HD is to standard def... really. Blows the apple away.

And if you are on facebook, this thing will be even more addictive.

What's the dealio with the Droid Eris? That thing looks pretty ill!!

-Jim.

I just got it for my wife actually.

Some of people I work with say they like it better (these people being lab technicians whose opinion is valuable). Its a slightly less powerful processor, and its running the last version of Android. I think they are going to eventually upgrade it to 2.0, but i can't confirm that.

But the thing is, HTC (maker of the Eris) is the device manufacturer with the most experience with android, and they make a killer theme. So basically even though they are running the old android OS, it doesnt matter cause they make it dope anyway.

If you don't want to spring 200 bills for the Droid, the Eris is definitely a worthy alternative.

if you dont have a Gmail/Google account I suggest you make one and start using it.

Oh. So it's like a girl phone? Screw that. I want a MAN phone baby!! Actually, I just watched some reviews on YouTube. They all say for the extra $100 to just get the Motorola one and be done with it. I can't believe that every review I've seen says the camera sucks. How is that possible? It's gotta be better than the 3M one in my G'Zone. When I played with your phone I didn't think it sucked, but I'm not a phone scientist😀

-Jim.

Camera is fine IMO. If you want Ill email you the pic you took of your bike.

1 thing is with the cheaper phone, you dont get the sick google turn by turn directions. Which is like free gps.

This thing rules! I'm glad I lfet the house an hour early yesetrday to get mine on the way to work. No lines but there were about 10 people there already. The phone is awesome! I killed a full charge yesterday because I was playing with it pretty much all day. Still trying to figure out what apps I should get.

Still trying to figure out what apps I should get.

So far I picked up a few free apps:

Pandora
Advanced Task Killer
Weather Channel & Weather Bug (trying to decide which I like better)
Documents To Go
Astro File Mgr & AndroZip (trying to decide which I like better)
StreamFurious (great for music streaming)
PDANet

My internal storage went from 256MB to 225MB with these 9 apps. There's room for plenty more but having the ability to run from the SD card would be nice long term.

Jeff,
Check out the Locale app.

It changes the settings on your phone based on your location.
So if your in the office, you can set it to go into vibrate mode automatically.

Pretty useful
