Verizon Droid

Just ordered mine online with free over night shipping, promo code FREEOVERNT.

When you get it online the $100 rebate came off automatically.

I also got 25% off accessories, although that may be a discount because of the company I work for has some deal with them, not sure.

Can't wait!

Jeff,
Check out the Locale app.

It changes the settings on your phone based on your location.
So if your in the office, you can set it to go into vibrate mode automatically.

Pretty useful

I can't seem to get locale working right. Its supposed to turn on my wifi when I get home but it doesn't stay on all the time. Good concept so I hope to get it figured out.

Went to Philly last night to see a show. Used Google navigation to get us to Tony Luke's, then to west Philly to the venue. Pulled up layers & switched on parking when we got nearby and had navigation take us to the lot of my choice. When we left, navigated to home and then pulled up layers again and searched for convenience stores near our route. Even in beta the free Google navigation is pretty damn good.

If anyone got the privacy screen protector from VZW and you're not linking it, take it back. It was recalled because its affecting the touch screen sensitivity. It worked fine for me 95% of the time, but the other 5% was enough to get really annoying. I applied the privacy film as soon as I got the phone. When my finacee got her phone Friday evening I immediately noticed how much more crisp her screen looked w/ the standard screen protector.

Strike 2 for the privacy film. VZW refunded me for it w/o trouble once the manager informed the customer svc rep that the film was recalled.

My app list so far: (all free)

Mileage - enter and track fuel mileage for your car(s)
Wifi Toggle Widget - Desktop widget for one click on/off for wifi
Advanced Task Killer Free - Cause not every app has a quit option, use this to help preserve battery life
Locale - Manage settings (wifi, call volume & ringtones etc) based on location.
Mobile Banking - I have BOA's app, fiancee has PNC but they don't have an android app yet
Barcode Scanner - take a picture of a product barcode & bring up information as well as pricing (there are a handful of these)
Pandora - a must have
Weather Channel - Doesn't use your GPS or cell tower location (unless I'm missing a setting somewhere) so this one is going to get replaced

238mb left to go

Apps I plan to try:
Documents to Go - MS office document viewer (I think it supports PDF too?)
Mobile Defense - find your phone if lost, remotely back up your data and wipe the phone if necessary
PicSay - picture editor
DialZero - Skip the voice prompts and get to a real person when you call a corporation
Business Card scanner - take a picture of a business card and add to contacts (doesnt seem to be a good free one available yet)

Pretty useful

yeah, pretty useful especially for the new slew of "back end" advertisers that are tracking you and will now triangulate your location to let you know that walgreens (which is a mere 1.5 blocks from your current location!) is having a sale on fiber.

Mrs. G and I bought two of these on Saturday. I charged mine that night, barely used it the next morning (I was riding my bike🙄) and by lunch time, the battery was dead. I took it back to the store and got a new one, about 18 hours after the initial purchase. 2nd phone seems to be holding a charge properly.

Being the luddite that I am, I'm sure I won't come close to exploiting this gizmo's potential. Christine, on the other hand, is having a blast finding all kinds of cool ways to use hers.

Go pour yourself a glass of Victory Gin and you'll forget all about it. 😉

While not quite as severe, my battery life seems to be less than desirable, especially compared to my fiancee's droid. Plus my camera is whacked out so I think I'll try to exchange mine tomorrow night.

is that a bad thing?

Anyone have any ideas on how to get Verizon to give me the full discount for new every two a few months early? I tried calling and asking nicely, but no soap.

considering what i'm working on, no. in fact i suggest all of you throw you current phone out the window* and go buy the latest and greatest "convergence device" you can afford.

*unless you already own an iphone, droid, htc, mytouch or equivalent high-tech smart phone. in that case, keep using it. everywhere.

Keep trying cause you get a new Rep each time. Remind them that you wan to spend more money each month on a smart phone plan

Maybe you guys already knew about this, but Google My Tracks can pretty much replace your Garmin Edge. Another free app.

This phone will have a good share of the market. But still love the Iphone.
Just got the GS Fast and really liking what they did, GPS works great and all.

The problem with the droid is its hard to find a nice protective case. Ive never been one to use a case because im usually pretty careful. But if I were to take this phone on ride, in place of my garmin, I would need a good case to put it in.

I've got the Body Glove snap-on case for mine. Seemed to be the sturdiest example available at the time of initial release. I'm still not 100% stoked about carrying it on rides.
