Wielding Jehovah's Cyclocross Battleaxe

ChrisG

I'm going to Toronto this weekend, which means I have 1 more MAC race to do, Kutztown. I really do want to make it to that race because I gave up on last season (and I guess the year before) and I want to roll the end of this year into the winter training. The more fire I pull from 2014 the better my winter drive will be.

Meaning that I only have that 1 race left in the 35+ MAC series. Next year 45+, and everything else this year will be NJ 40+, which is possibly 2 at Marty's, our race, Crossnado, and Sussex. Maybe.

I'll be 43 next month, that's right. So I'm racing as a 44 year old right now.

The adage is that the older you are, the longer it takes you to warm up. I'm 45, you're like 25. So there's that.

My 5k

Fine, at lunch today:

This is the fastest I have ever "run". Hopefully I can keep this motivation up. I would prefer to do a loop with no hills though. It may not look like a lot to you, but to me, it's not 0. 0 is good. Anything more than that is gravity proving.

But now my legs hurt and the ride tonight is going to be hard.

Soul

Kevin, do you have any soul? Can you dance? Are you black?

I would say that the line, "a person's deeply felt moral and emotional nature" would fit the bill. But it doesn't matter much. If I say my blender has soul, well then hell with it, it has soul. If I drop the right thing it and turn it on, you could say it dances, which is soul enough.

Soul

Excellent - next time run faster and push it like you push your body when you race. oh - don't injure yourself, I couldn't live with that on my conscious because I'm the A-hole telling you to push it 🙂

If you ever saw my dance you would know that there is about as much black in my as was left in Michael Jackson.

But those are references all refer to a persons relation to soul, not the bike to you. The bike does not look at you and have those feels. Or at least we have not figured out a way to tell if it has such and until that time, soulless.

Youare in the cpmopany of these people with the soul thing btw.

By the way - Nice way to tighten the screws towards the end... Have you ever thought of starting out with a sprint for as long as you can and then continue running while you recover and as you recover maintain a faster pace? I use to start at an easy pace and then tighten the screws. Then I switched to sprint out of the gate and then slow down slightly and settle into a tolerable pace... Like just below threshold and continue that for as long as you can and then sprint the last bit of the 5k. You;d be surprised how much faster your 5k time will be because your initial mile would be super fast and the following miles would be way faster than if you started out easy.

^Advice for how to race cross in a nutshell.^

Looking at lap times from Providence day 1 my first lap was 30 seconds longer then anyone else around me. If you looked at the race leaders in the 2/3 you would se ~8:40 first lap, ~8:25 second then plateauing around 8:57 or so.

I went the opposite way. 9:34, with a linear decrease to 9:05. I passed my way to my finishing position where if I could have given a better first lap I would have already been ahead. You could also say maybe I would have blown up.

You can also attribute traffic to slower first laps. You actually can't go harder.

Ideal situation: Good call up in the front, a powerful sprint to stay up front and then go as hard as you can as long as you can. More or less Mike's running advice.

Mike- You may have CX figured out already. Before you know it we will be talking upgrade. 😉

not a bad run norm. how hard were you pushing? i didn't expect to see you anywhere close to an 8 Minute Mile.

i think i would agree with the bikes having soul thing. i will have a difficult time parting with my madone when the time comes. we have been though many miles and #JRE episodes together.

or.

maybe it's just that we grow fond of these objects because we spend so much time with them. we develop memories, friendships, and associate them with the bike. they become more than bikes, but triggers for happiness.

or not.

Actually, I am and have been perplexed that my running performance hasn't translated over to bike performance.. In fact, I am pretty upset that I can't ride at the extreme level that I can run... I think it could be one of three things or all at them at the same time...

1. Leg strength is there for running but not there for bike racing
2. I'm over training
3. I'm too much in my head.. especially before and during the race

:hmmm:

Time for Bikenben help!

Totally different muscles. A similar mindset for endurance and you gain cardio from running to biking but all different muscles. Just ride more, it will come. Oh, like a lot
More and not just riding around, pushing yourself

Yep. I can ride a ton but if I don't run at least once a week, legs will be sore as hell after a good run. Tho I have noticed I've gotten faster running by riding alot as well.

Adding on to this...

Ever ask yourself if you are engaging your glutes when pedaling? How is your posture on the bike? Ever try hip flexor exercises? Maybe a bike fit?

Though I don't train with Ben I will say I respect the guys opinion and would trust him with any training program for me

A year ago I pulled a hip flexor because I increased my running to quickly and my hip flexor a weren't strong enough. So I rehabbed it by lots of core work, yoga and heavy leg work in the gym

With regards to posture, not a clue

as discussed. why I don't drink coffee or complicated tea 😉

Milk. It has no place in espresso.

I should make this thread more of a running dialog sometimes. I saw Luke Saturday. He has a crazy watch that can do stuff like take pictures of your guests that have curse words on them in front of the children.

I'm sorry, I'm sorry! Megan made the shirt and told me to wear it. What was I supposed to do?
