was probably a Rough Green Snake. We don't have Vine Snakes in New Jersey.

That box turtle is a male. Males have red eyes. He also looks pretty old. I'm guessing 30 Years.

Now you've made me curious.....how can you tell it's age?

Look at the photo and think about how you tell the age of a tree... I bet you see it!

Is that it? I thought it was in their color...I've seen some very much more orange than that. Also being at Allaire I would have guessed it was a Sand Turtle. 🙄

I just looked at him and guessed. The wear and patina on his carapace leads me to believe he's been around a while. Plus the typical pattern and colorations are fading in a way that I see in older turtles.

You can usually determine the age by counting the growth rings on the turtle's scutes. But they do stop growing at a point, so that becomes moot.

Box turtles will typically live to 50 although some have even made it to 100. In New Jersey, they are more likely to be hit by a car before reaching that age.

Interesting facts capedoc. That vine snake was sleek and fast. And he start doing the s formation ready to strike and then he bolted into the bushes. Im amazed of snakes and reptiles.

very pretty turtle 🙂

I posted this in "my" thread, but figured I'd put it here as well.

I got a ride in at Ceres and came across two box turtles, couldn't take them off the trail. They were hooked up like two dogs in a schoolyard. Then a little later when talking to one of the dog walkers one of his dogs kick up a big black snake, like 4 to 5 ft. Have not seen one that big for sometime and it wasn't giving up any ground.

Turtles doing it is a funny sight to see. It's like two VW bugs doing it. Very awkward when you have a shell.

I caught these 2 a few years ago while building the now named "turtle love" skinny

Dam! That just how they looked on the two I rode up on. I have to get a smart phone to get better pics on the things I come across. The snake was big and still can't get over on it's size.

Hawk or falcon munching on lunch !
