Cars, it's electric! Do Do Do

WOW, @rick81721 wife getting a X! Time to retire the GT350 jk
@Mahnken congrats on the Y

This is a solid thread! 🙂 But will be very opinionated haha. For the EV seekers don't pay attention to the strongly opinionated. Do what is right for your needs.

We are on our 5th EV so it goes without saying that it works for us and it works for majority of people. I've spent 4.5 hrs driving my 2015 Model S (230ish displayed range) straight a couple weekends ago. No supercharging. I've driven the Model 3 from Hillsborough to Newark, DE and back, NO SUPERCHARGING. I spend hella time in the car traveling for work. It could be 2-3 hrs per day. I enjoy the Model S 100% from sick highway over taking or bumper to bumper autopilot.

ICE drivers:
How many times do you get gas? (driving to/from work, shuttling kids, errands) twice a week? So 10min per week? 40 min per month. If you need to supercharge just once a month the benefits of a EV outweigh the range and time constraints. That's just my opinion. PLUS the cost of gas.
my little focus gets 35mpg typically....my drive to and from work is 35 miles round trip...so thats 175miles a week, factor in other driving, usually fill it every 2 weeks...it holds 12 gallons....so thats about 6 minutes every 2 weeks. However, I would grant that if i was really going to buy an EV, I would have some kind of home or work charge option figured out first...so I would probably remove that 6 min per week....

BUT...for me at least, there is no saving money with an electric car at this point with regards to fuel.... I mean do the math on my focus...it was 18,900 new...I have put 150,000 miles on it now in almost 10 years of ownership. Even at $3.00 a gallon....and ill be NICE and lower my mpg to 32, although it will get 38 on the highway. Thats $14,062 in gas in 10 years and 150k miles....thats just about $33,000 with fuel......Still a LONG LONG way off from $50 to 60k tesla. Maybe when it dies there will be something that is ~25k, awd, hatchback...or otherwise utilitarian...

I would like one, but they are still too expensive...my wifes outback has adaptive cruise control and lane keeping...its not auto pilot, but dam for the 23k I spent on it, its pretty awesome and requires me to do almost nothing when driving on the highway.

@rlb I got it at the end of January, seemed to be alot of 3.6rs around....I love it, finally a subaru that isnt slow as #$%^&* 🙂

We used to have a Yaris. That thing got almost 50MPG and cost us 10k out the door brand new. The cost to run it for the 200k we put on it is about the same as the first year of a Tesla. EV is not the future of anything...

The vast majority of pollution come from a small group of companies, my urge to go electric is just for the same as going from my razor phone to a droid incredible, it's time for a change.

That said I I have been granted permission(we both have to agree to large purchases) to buy an auxiliary vehicle. I am getting a step van to convert to an RV or a deuce and a half.

I can dig that 👍. I think they are interesting although I would really like to see different body shapes as you aren't held down to the confines of a ICE layout. Like a forward control utility vehicle/truck.

I also can't stand the people that think they are "holier than tho" that drive them while talking about clean emissions but still live in a 10k sq ft house.

Love the sounds of the step van or the deuce and a half. The deuce and a half isn't a clean diesel but it will burn any and all "recycled" fuel!

Getting a deuce is purely going to be if I can/have the motivation to track down a supply of oil and convert it to bio diesel, I want to roll coal fries on these brodozers with some w.e. the liberal flag of the month is. I just want a bobbed deuce it would be a lot of fun and they're cheap.

The step van would be a partnership with my childhood best friend, we wanted to build one up for personal use with the perk of renting it on a site like this, but with his impending child that has been placed on the back burner. I'm going to keep putting cash on in fake money so when he is ready we can jump on it.

Its an interesting thing for sure. I'm not against change but i have issues with a number of things.
- range issues...OK well covered.
- my time, yes I can adapt.
- what happens to the batteries & cost related / loss of function...environment / real recycling and of course...did I mention cost.
- vehicle complexity is a thing for sure and more electronics (and software)...scare me. I can fix my cars (mechanically) but electronic soup will be a hard to fix thing. Great until you get gremlins. OK, pay someone....who is the someone. Will I need a mechanic with a PHD and will they be available and what will that cost. The complexity is out kicking the coverage (or so I'm concerned). My newer Truck has a lot of electronics, great when it works but I remember my old truck when shit started to crap out one thing at a time. its silly but not long after new the truck the radio went from normal volume to max volume randomly at a stop light. I nearly pooped my pants. It never happened again but if it did or if real functionality went nuts....I wonder.
- I have a 12yo mazda 3, it gets 30+ mpg and has very little issues. how will software, electronics etc age.

As has been spoken, if it works for you its a great thing. MFG's are rushing at this thing and with that rush comes unforseen "issues", especially in the effort to be cost competitive. Its a playing field where mechanical meets computer. Computer hates mechanical, weather and the like. I didn't even mention corrosion.

Computers have been in cars for 30+ years. I think they have figured it out by now...

You say this like cars are purely mechanic, they have computers and sensors that eat shit all the time. An EV won't have the stupid sensors the mechanical engines depend on or dumb ass emission systems to fight every 2 years.

Go take apart an electric rc car and scale it up, far simpler

Yep if you want to rank new cars by complexity - hybrid > IC > EV

Just plugged in my car for 4 hours of driving tomorrow. Fuck all ya’ll opinions and scenarios. So happy in my smooth EV.

sooo here is a relatable story tonight. Went out to dinner with in laws all in one car in a congested area. I tell FIL just pull up to the first spot you see nearby. It literally was 3 blocks from the restaurant. During our 15 min wait he decides to try to move it closer when everyone said don’t! After dinner we spent 1.5hrs looking for his car and even the police were involved for the like 20minutes. Finally found the car not where he described it to be. If his car was “connected” via app. We would have been in a better situation with a 6 year old and 2 YO. Okay my FIL is straight starting to lose his memory. This is the straw that broke the camel’s back. Time to start planning with MIL.

Haha

You know what really sucks with ICE cars. 97 degree day and traffic jams then commuting on your bike past those jammed cars with engines and A/C running full tilt and have it feel 10 degrees hotter.

Also, honestly going 5mph slower than your normal 75mph isn’t going to make your day worse.

Canoo is the closest thing to forward control in the works. Looks like an interesting platform

Seriously....do I have to act like manny when I buy an electric car? I might prefer choking the world with smog rather than smug 🙂
