Easier said then done, especially if you know no one in the area. Highly depends on the area too. In Moab or Grand Junction, you probably have a pretty good chance of hooking up with someone and have them showing you some not so well known stuff. If you tried the same thing in BC, trying to find some of the good North Shore stuff, I think you would have a completely different experience. For those of us that don't have a bunch of connections or a group to go with and the time to put into exploring the area, a guided tour is the way to go.

In New Zealand its not a problem, I already did it and personally know others who have too. I returned to live there for 5 months a few years later.

There are many people from Ridemonkey (MikeD, Deyv, Isabella, Echo, and others) who had a great time touring NZ on their own and I even randomly ran into them the when I was living in Wellington.

New Zealand is very cycling friendly destination (Vorb is often the top sports website in NZ for example), a packaged tour is unnecessary and you are missing a valuable experience by not interacting with locals and experiencing the culture. Its the point of traveling, otherwise you are better off staying home.
