Garmin Edge 705 and Mapping Software

Yeah sure that would be sweet.
I'm going to work on my site to figure out a way to give people editor passwords so a bunch of us can contribute to it.
I'll work on another theme eventually too, I know the white on black annoys some people. I have to figure out a way to make the theme switchable.

Do a wiki?

It's not the white on black, so much as going back to a page that it's white on black. That's when it strains your eyes/brain/kama.

OT note - I broke my not even two month old 705 the other day - the LCD won't display anything, the unit still records data. Yesterday it self-ejected on a fire road after three hours of riding and staying mounted. Lesson - Don't ride on fireroads?

As others have said, Garmin CS was awesome. Other than a 30 minute hold (thank you speakerphone) they took care of me very quickly. In fact a new unit is already on its way to me while I still have the old one. I was a bit nervous because I bought it off of ebay and the warranty policy specifically calls out it won't honor warranty claims w/out a receipt from a real vendor, or something to that effect. I'm impressed.

One thing that bothers me about navigating the course, not sure if it is possible to adjust. It signals directions every 10-20 seconds. and this is regardless if you do have to turn OR if you have 20 miles of straight road.

So it blocks out any other screen you're in with the instructions to basically go straight.

Besides turning off the navigation is there a way to adjust this?

Clarification - this is when one is following "Saved Rides" under Where To, not "Courses" under Training

Ugh! I was screaming at it today! It wouldnt shut up! Travel North in 5 feet...travel north some more for 3.432 feet. QUIET!

I think im going to use the training>courses mapping.

Other than that it was nice to see a map with some roads and pretty colors!

Oh speaking of which, Norm do you still have the reciepts? 🙄

I read 8 pages so far. I like how the topo looks, my question is this:
If I upload as per Kush's directions, will I still be able to revert back to the original loaded chip that came with the 705? I'm kinda scared to do this, like some of you I'm not a computer wizz and not exactly the sharpest tack in the box. My first 705 by mistake I back over it with my 4runner (cried for days) what do ya think?

RC ... 🙂

Updating firmware is easy, current latest version is 2.8. It's the first thing you should do when you get the unit before you start setting it up. If somehow it does go wrong a call to Garmin and your warranty has it covered.

I use the storage space built into my unit just for ride data, I have about 6 different maps compiled into the single map file on the sd card. Garmin City Nav and then a bunch of topo maps from gpsfiledepot, NY, NJ, ME. OH, AL, TN etc etc.

The Garmin City Navigator map will navigate correctly and provide routed directions along streets, like your car GPS. The free topo maps don't have this ability. So when I'm on a road ride I use the City Nav map, when I'm off road I turn the City Nav map off and rely on the topo.

Yippie!

I did it! Ok, I did have a few Utoh's but it was pretty easy. If I can do it, I assure you anyone can. Thanks Kush, Norm and 6thElement. Ok what other fun stuff ya got?

RC ... 🙂

Alright I've been busting my ass on this for 2 days now.
http://gtluke.com/gps-mapping/

I'm actually really fucking excited that I got the wiki to work inside my webpage to keep it seemless.

Anyone can sign up for the wiki and give a hand editing this stuff or adding your own.
It's got it's own file uploader too for the .gpx files or maps.

http://gtluke.com/mapwiki/index.php/

Most of the bulk work is done now, I just need to spend some time and pretty it up and fix my horrible writing. NORM! 😀

I guess now I have to do a how to on how to add a new map wiki page eh? god dammit, thought I was done for now 🙂

Ok, I'm going to need some time to do this. I'll need to run through it myself first then edit the instructions.

The aim here is to teach people how to make their own, but ultimately we want to have a bunch of GPX courses we can download and drop in the GPX folder on the Garmin itself, right?

I have read through most of this thread and am still confused about a few things on the 705.

1. If I order the base unit w/o additional maps, is it still useful for general road navigation?

2. Even with the small screen, can it still help you find your way home w/o having loaded pre-planned routes?

3. Do you still use a standard bike computer (Cateye, etc...), or does the Edge 705 totally replace it?

Tim.

1. Almost none at all.
1a. You can upload free maps

2. I don't know if there's a "go home" option. I imagine you can add your home as a point of reference (or something) and then click "go here" or the like. It would likely reset your ride stats though.

3. I only use the Garmin now.

1. For proper road navigation and routing you need the Garmin City Navigator maps. With the free topo maps it can only draw a straight crow flies line to a location, rather than routing along the roads as the map doesn't contain the required data. You could upload a pre-drawn GPX file track but I'm not sure how well turn-by-turn directions would work. Buy the unit, then buy the City Navigator DVD and a 2GB microSD card separately, rather than the Garmin microSD with the map already on it. If you want them, get the unit with the heart and cadence sensors.
2. Yes, you can either ask the unit to guide you back to the start, select a point on the map, input an address or save your home address as a waypoint and request that the unit navigates to the location.
3. Totally replaces it.

Great thread. Still need to figure out how to get my uploaded routes on the 705 to look as polished and purty as your's but thanks for all the help.

If anyone has some space to house topo maps. I generated nice transparent maps to overlay on the Garmin maps so that you can keep routing on as well as see the topo features.
