When you lead most of the race there's not as much to remember 🙂

Nice job Sunday Mike. Did you race mtb before or where u mainly road. 1st place is really impressive in Cat 1 after being off the bike for awhile. Congrats!

Thanks Chris, yeah I started in the woods and only got on the road to get faster in the woods. So I raced Expert for a while but my last MTB race before The Chainstretcher (2012) was in 2000 I think.

I'd say good luck this race season but with your ablility I'll just say have fun. See you out there.😀

Nice work Iggy...I felt the same way in the beginning of the race...Could not wait to get to the gasline trail and get off that fire road. It had to be 30min more or less.

I dont know, but i find jungle easier than waywayanda...cant really explain why though.

The fire roads at Jungle are quick connectors to st. Its mostly technical st, not killer stuff but it just wears you out bouncing around on football sized rocks. You ride strong and hold a good line in that stuff, its more of an effort for me to stay on course. I find a little more flow on the larger rocks at wayway.

That is one part for sure, there is really no place to open up at jungle, so you dont have to worry much about drilling yourself on the fire roads.

Well, we did the 24 HoA in 2000, and then I think we did a few mtb races together in 2001. Was it Mahlon, the day after your bachelor party, or Mt. Creek? :hmmm: It's all getting blurry at this stage of the game, though I'm sure I have it all written down at home.

Good race report Iggs! You know how to keep it real. I'm really down with that.

On the waway to jungle comparision, I also think that waway has more flow and variety. Jungle is very rugged and can mess with some people's composure. I myself love to ride Jungle, but do not care to race there as much. When I do, I just ride and forget that I am racing. At waway, I race. And I'm not saying that what I do is a good idea, it just fits in with my personal attention span and risk management.

This is a spot-on description of my one and only race up there, in 2007. I felt like I'd been beaten by a mob when it was over, though grinding out 5th in an Expert race made the aches a little easier to deal with.

I got married in 2000 and I'm pretty sure that I only trained for Mt. Washington in 2001 ? It was Mahlon the day after my bachelor party.:drooling:

This is a rest week for me so not much to report. I will just share that I like how this racing season in going. Starting with the short track series at Mooch I am really enjoying the racing this year. After the ST there was Battenkill then SSaP and just last weekend I did Wayway. Wayway is the most mispelled word ever, but I think you're allowed to invent your own spelling for that word.

Its not that I'm tearing up the trails with my speed and getting on the podium. The fun is the thrill of competition and seeing people I like at races. I still am a little tense before the start but this is normal, the elation of racing outways any pre-race jitters.

Things are slow around here so I busted out a video that my son made for his school project. He had to interview his grandparents for one of his classes. This is not real exciting stuff but I do enjoy hearing stories 1st hand of peoples experiences throughout life. For those who know me here is a glimpse into my family, my mom and dad...its only a 2 min clip.

I cant decide if you look more like your mom or dad...😕

How cool is it that your father knew sargent shriver...dude you are connected to to so many people using the six degree principle🙂

I also like seeing/hearing historic points in time from a first person perspective...thanks for sharing.

Thanks Brian & Mike.

Yeah my dad is like Ned Flanders, the kinda guy you'd want for a neighbor or dad. My mom is sweet but can be pushy and opinionated...kinda like me. I think I have a little more of a wild streak though.

I think my parents we're the only ones in San Francisco in the 60's not getting high...have a listen. Well I think my mom was a little but when your 17 yr. old grandson in interviewing you that's not the kind of thing you admit.

Yeah I think your rite about Mom, "tourist attraction"...lol

Some schools have programs where people like your parents go into classrooms every week and just talk to the kids about their life experiences.

Got any more?

That was great...It was cool hearing your mother talk about getting her college diploma during a time when it was not that common(but beginning to be) for women...and your dad about the "counterculture" when he was just trying to make a living and get by. I bet you parents have seen a lot of crazy sh$t in their time, and are like "whatever". Really cool that your son is capturing some of this info...my sister did a similar project when she was in highschool(but that was late 80's and it was on cassette😱) and every now and then I listen to my copy and think about their journey from the Emerald Isle on the boat in the '20s.

Sorry to derail your thread...but I like the topic...ok...back to training🙂

Besides the stories from first hand stories, I like to see the expressions on people's face as they tell a story. To me its very revealing and makes the story more interesting.

I was listening to my neighbor and her sister(both in there 80's) tell a story of a fight they got into when they we're kids. As they we're telling the story they started giggling at each like they were 8 yrs. old. Watching them tell this story made me laugh, I don't remember what they were talking about but the expressions on their faces was memorable.

I'll post up some more clips next week, I don't want to blow my youtube wad.

Shit, gotta get ready to go...I'm meeting Falco and his buddies at Jungle to ride the racecourse.

Well I didn't race my bike last wknd but I did get together with my teamates for some socializing. It was fun to meet in a non cycling atmosphere last Saturday night, wear normal clothes, drink and talk loud. My wife has always accused me of talking too loudly and I always shot back with you speak too softly. At the gathering practically everyone on the team told my wife I speak loudly, I was out numbered. Ok I can be loud sometimes.

The night was like a high school dance, all the dudes huddled up talking guy talk and all the chic's flocked togther and talked girl stuff. The food forced everyone to sit down, eat and act civilized. This is when Santalucia's wife, Kelly, and my wife, Mary started bonding over there loss of there husbands due to cycling. Kelly asks my wife, how far does you're husband travel to race, my husband drove 30 miles north of Albany to attend a race. I started laughing as I told her, yeah I did that race, you're husband gave me a ride there. I guess it just goes to show how much our wives love us and miss us when we're gone.

tillTuesday

Well yesterday looked like it was gonna be an all day soaker but on the drive home from work the rain stopped. I checked out weather.com and saw an opportunity to get in a ride so I went for it. The 3hr. tempo was a last minute call, I figured I've been pretty lame lately...time to bust a move. I was really into this ride and was able to stay focused to keep it in tempo pace. The sun was out by the time I got to Burnt Mills, good thing I didn't do some 1hr. cruise around ride...I would have been pissed at myself later.

I need to work on tempo pace and distance, my endurance is not where it should be for Bearscat. I am going to just throw some shit together and hope for the best. I like the proximity of the H2H races this year, they seem to be closer together but I have been neglecting longer training rides to prep for H2H race distances. Screw it dude lets go antiquing.

Tonight

I drove Jamie to soccer practice in Morristown then shot over to Patriots Path on my MTB for a recover pace ride. About 20 minutes in my chain explodes, I have no tools and Jamie has to picked up in 40 minutes...yikes. I fiddled with the chain for 10 minutes then hop on the bike and use it like a kick- and- go to get back to the lot where I left my car.

As I pass the trail head lot for Lewis Morris I see this dude loading his bike on his car and getting ready to head out. I scoot over and tell him my tail of woe and ask him if he would be willing to give me a ride back to my car. He says sure no problem. I start talking cycling with the dude and come to find out his name is Diego, he races cat 2 SS and he knows Utah Joe...every Marty's guy know's Utah. Well thank God for Diego or I would have been a half hour late getting Jamie...no one wants to be that parent who shows up that late to pick up their kid.
