The Indoor Cyclist's support thread

Yeah coming off a dumb trainer the last 8 years have to go back in and reset everything. No way I should have hit the high watt numbers with my HR that low.
Decided to recheck the setup and my connections were probably wrong this morning. I think this is better I had a mix of the old and new stuff mixed up.

Will see how it goes tmw.

It was a Wahoo.
Was going to get a Garmin for the trainer. But now might get a Polar.
From what I understand, they know it's a thing, too. I went through 4 Tickrs, 2 of which were sent to me as 'courtesy' replacements before I figured out it was the straps. It's a shame, because I prefer to stay within ecosystems for my electronics (love Wahoo computers, trainers). Waddaya gonna do.

Here to vent; Tried to do a workout inside and once again I couldn’t hit the numbers outside… too lazy to do an actual indoor vs outdoor ftp test so I guess I’ll just never do workouts inside lol
Without doing a FTP test, perhaps try doing the workouts but just drop the power by 10 percent.

just don't get a coospoo....
my wahoo still works after a few years. Gotta remove the battery and put it back every so often.
might have to spring for the polar now!
I was going to say my CooSpoo works fine except it's actually a Moofit 🙂

When riding indoors I now just use my watch for HR. While it's not as accurate as a chest strap, it's there already. Is there really much benefit to having accurate heart rate while on the trainer when you're riding with power?

lower hr, higher power, better fitness?????

my watch is ANT, and I use it with the Elemnt.
someone should make a bt <--> ANT relay/repeater.
then anything could work with anything.

wonder if i could hack a head unit?

My fenix watch HR lags way too much and certainly doesn’t get high enough compared to the chest strap. May be good for longer short rides, but a CX race at 150bpm avg is no way correct, when it should be in the 180s the whole time lol

I'm the first person who will say it's basically useless for outdoor training. I have had the same experience that during a CX race after the fact my HR says I walked to the market. While running it severely lags when doing intervals and takes awhile to even start to become accurate. My point is that you're not using HR as a metric for training when indoors. *Maybe* it's useful as a power vs HR so you can see if there's an improvement.

While riding indoors I find the watch is good enough. What I really care about is the power of the trainer, the HR hardly matters. It's specifically why TrainerRoad doesn't show it as a metric # on the workouts.

Yes, lower HR while doing the same or higher power shows increased fitness. But it doesn't really change what you should be doing for the workout itself which is based on power. And if the HRM is consistent or accurate enough you should see that change.

I believe there's two devices, the above heart rate monitor and something else that DCRainmaker uses. I think that HRM is popular for people with apple TVs that they use for Zwift and such as they don't support a lot of BT channels.

Wearing a HRM for most people is similar to having a Fitbit/Garmin/Etc with sleep tracking. It's a metric that could be handy that 99% of the people don't use to actually make an improvement with.

ATV/Zwift Routes extra BT through the Zwift companion app - puts controls on the handlebar too.

That bridge functionality is really cool! Older head units that don't have both radios would help.

I find that the watch HR is ok at basic endurance pace and it tracks pretty closely to my chest strap but once you start hitting some intervals it just fails completely, it shows my max HR off by 20 beats or so which is massive.

As far as using it for training, yeah it's important to track your HR both indoors and out, watch some pro races, they are all wearing chest straps even though they have PM's on their bikes, if you do any type of tracking of your fitness overall then having HR trends is important for many good reasons.

I’ve been using a Garmin chest strap and HRM probably for 10 years (not the same one eww). Until the last few years it was ANT only and I always had the HRM battery die before the strap failed. The first one took over a few years because I wasn’t riding that much.

I think now I am on my 3rd or 4th FREE replacement ONLY because they design the HRM module with the worst little screws that strip out when try to change the battery.

I literally email them. They ask for my address. They send me a new one $70 retail with the strap and HRM no questions asked.

The last 2 times they sent me ANT BT dual ones I never have any issues with dropouts indoors or outside. Just have to make sure i get the strap and contacts wet before I ride.

Those screws were the reason I moved to wahoo tickr. Mine just STB for no reason, 2 emails and 4 days later I have a new one. Concerned it only lasted a year doe

wahoo has great customer service. I've gotten a new free warranty replacement tickr (arm band) 3 times now when the strap lug breaks. Last time (earlier this year) they suggested making the strap a little looser on my huge forearms.

Well now I know the trainer and zwift are working properly I could feel the slight resistance differences when hitting some inclines maintaining my cadence the effort required was more. I probably should have tried a more hilly course to really test it.

On the downside now I see the ANT connection is very unstable and kept dropping out while I was pedaling continuously even to the point my avatar would stop and take a break while I was spinning the pedals at 90rpm.

Decided this PC is too just old (doesn’t have BT) and need to simplify things so going to get the Apple TV and a decent monitor to treat myself. Especially since my indoor workouts will increase frequency with this new job and I already have to build in time to warm up and calibrate the trainer each session.

Probably go back to the fluid2 for now until I get the appleTV ordered and set up.

My connection is dropping out today as well. Might be a zwift thing. Bluetooth and Ant+
good to know, LMK if your next session is better or not maybe I will try it again or get a $6 BT USB adapter for the PC for now.

Based on seeing how my other friends have the ATV set up, seems much faster to get up and running than a Windows based PC. Last thing I need is tech issues when I have a limited time window to get my workout in on the early mornings i try to train.
