WTF KFC? Katie Compton - Banned for doping

It seems to be the basic pattern for most athletes who are just beyond their prime who resort to PEDs to regain that prime condition, guilty or not this seems to fit that model. Cycling putting a 4yr ban is absurd, they are missing an opportunity to give that athlete a chance to have a real come back story. I am on the side of let them all dope and have a legit winner because this ain't working.

Didn't they try that in the 90's with road cycling by allowing certain limits? Worked great until people's heart started stopping in the middle of the night.

Katie Compton’s full statement below:

This news comes with great heartache and sadness, and it is the worst possible way to end my cycling career. I need to preface this news with the fact that I have always been a clean athlete, and I am proud of how much I have accomplished racing clean and being very careful with whatever I put into my body, especially after dealing with so many health issues throughout my life.

I provided a sample for USADA in September 2020 that came back negative for any banned substances, it was not even atypical. That news was communicated to me in the same way it has always been via a letter from USADA. I’ve received that same letter after every test I’ve submitted for the last 19 years. In early February of 2021, after returning from a difficult race season, I learned that the same sample from September was re-analyzed due to a bio-passport irregularity and found to be positive for an exogenous anabolic steroid. This was devastating news to me as I have never intentionally or knowingly put anything like that into my body. I know how delicate women’s hormones are, and I would never choose to take anything to jeopardize my health and, as a result, suffer irreparable damage to my endocrine system. And not only that, I never took anything for ethical and moral reasons; I’ve been a strong proponent of clean sport my entire career and feel doing anything to enhance one’s own natural ability is cheating, full stop.

Despite deciding to retire in March, I also felt the need to try and defend myself and my reputation. I hired a lawyer and did my best to investigate how the substance got into my system but was unsuccessful in finding that answer. Over the past six months, I learned that I cannot prove that I didn’t intentionally take anything, and I can’t afford to keep fighting knowing the outcome will be the same regardless. Unfortunately, seeing that it was five months between the sample collection and the notification, trying to figure what allegedly got into my body proved to be impossible, and I have decided to stop fighting an expensive and difficult battle and accept the sanction.

So, it is with great stress and sorrow that I’ve ended my competitive career. My friends and family know how much I’m against doping and know it is a topic in which I have always been outspoken. This news is gut-wrenching to me and the worst period I’ve ever experienced during my life so far. I’ve processed all the emotions over the past year and realized that I don’t need bike racing in my life anymore. I still love riding my bike and enjoying that with friends, but I have no desire to ever race or be competitive again, which is probably good since the sanction includes a four-year ban from competition.

I wanted to share this news prior to USADA releasing it to the public so you hear it from me first. I’m obviously stepping away from the competitive cycling world for the next few years and don’t know what my future within the sport may look like post sanction, but I want people to know that I’ll miss the racing community, specifically all the amazing people I’ve met along the way who simply share the love of riding bikes. I’ll always cherish the experiences and wonderful adventures cycling has given me while also acknowledging that it has brought me plenty of heartache and disappointment, and I’m emotionally and mentally exhausted. Ending my career this way is simply soul-crushing. It physically hurts and makes me incredibly sad.

To get back on topic, anyone try the new Gardein Ultimate Chicken Patties? They are gold!!

Also had lunch last weekend at Baklava Lady in Englishtown and she made us the new Beyond Chicken sandwiches, also absolutely golden but not available in too many spots yet.

The real KFC generally makes me sad (the thought of fried chicken even brings a little puke to my mouth), what morality seems to have stooped to according to some posts in this thread made me feel even worse...

That said, doping in cycling is as old as the sport. Leaving morals behind, I find amateur cyclists assuming performance enhancing drugs pathetic, what's the end goal behind risking your own health, KOM on your local Strava segment?

More on the specific I don't want to and can't pass any judgement.

I am on the side of let them all dope and have a legit winner because this ain't working.
As long as they're willing to risk their own health that would actually make sense, kind of. That wouldn't stop them from trying to out do the competition using the next level performance enhancing drug before anybody else, it's human nature and it's sad.

I don't get why vegan can't simply eat fruits and vegetables. Aren't these fake burgers, chicken etc. highly processed in order to make them taste similar to meat? I do get not wanting to kill animals, which fully justifies being vegan in my opinion, but I'm dubious (not against) of these fake meats that are popping out everywhere.

Ya, when they decide to do this...alot of people are going to die.....again like the old days that created this current system.
That doesn't make $100 million not worth it.

Wasn't Barry Bonds kind of an asshole? Maybe he isn't liked for more than just getting caught doping. Tons of baseball players got caught doping.
he could be an asshole and still make a fortune every year off his accomplishments...thats all gone now.....and where are Sosa, Clemens, Bonds, conseco now? All ghosts, and reading their quotes...money isnt buying them happiness....Clemens actually started pitching in the independent leagues lol

Fruit is high in sugar, and vegetables aren't very filling. The faux meat stuff that has come out recently is definitely heavily processed, and anyone that thinks it's healthy because it's "made from plants" probably doesn't know much about nutrition, but that shit tastes pretty good. It's a great alternative for vegetarians that don't like the way animals are raised and slaughtered.

Katie's letter does sound like she didn't dope intentionally, but how do we know. There is uncertainty, however Ima apply Occam's razor here, I believed she doped...knowingly

You could look at the 4yr ban as an our for her. Lets say they banner her for a year, after that time if she didn't come back to attain the same level of performance, every one would believe she was doping all along. Has anyone ever come back from a doping scandal to perform well clean?

The uncertainty that surrounds her exodus will help her be able to put this behind her. These athletes who dope have to have an exit strategy for when they get caught, eventually they get caught. Hopefully they banked enough money to retire and know how to spin it once busted.

@Juggernaut choking on his lunch when seeing this...

Now it is questionable if Valverde is now clean but even if he is, he falls into the category of "he could train harder / reach a level not achievable naturally because of his past doping, which gives him an unfair advantage moving forward".

Unfortunately role models just happen. We've got entire film & music industries teeming with celebrity role models that are addicted to cocaine & heroin. Compared to that how bad is doping? These athletes are doing what many kids have been taught in their whole lives - do what you can do get ahead. As a kid, you have this notion that the world is maybe pure at some level. Then you grow up and realize that's nonsense. The nice old man down the street is a registered sex offender. Your history teacher got arrested for planting cameras in the school bathroom. Good god look at what these churches have to deal with.

We haven't even open the can of worms that contains the Bill Clintons & Andrew Cuomos of the world.

The concept of a high-profile role model is dead, much like Nietzsche's god.
Agreed. I think a big part of the problem is that athletes go out of their way to try to be role models and spokespeople. The hypocrisy is in the seeking out this role. I agree that cycling is a farce; long ago I stopped believing the fantastic performances. But it is such a beautiful sport to participate in.

I agree, but then in the current model...how else can someone like KFC really earn a living? Just constantly be a SM presence....ill use the example if Kate Courtney....Personally I have never seen Kate Courtney race in person or on TV....But I see her on SM non stopped...assuming she is doing this since she has sponsors that she has to satisfy....I think its too much and as such, I dont enjoy following professional athletes, but I dont begrudge them trying to make a living...and this is just what they have to do. As opposed to "pick NFL player"...Saquon Barkley lets say....He has the giants and the NFL promoting him, he has people who handle his social media....quite frankly, I would think the NFL prefers that players stay the hell off social media and just let their PR people handle everything.......The NFL doesnt need players out there telling the public about themselves....Usually the public gets turned off bc players argue about absurd amounts of money....(which I think they have every right to) ...but just the difference between a sport that is just a wash with money from TV, and another that has pretty much no money.

...personally id LOVE to see the anti doping testing bus show up at an H2h race....results would probably be shocking.
This is the part that gets me. I totally understand athletes just a smidge below the highest level deciding to dope. It's the difference between millions and another wanna be forced to get a real job they're probably not very good at because they've spent their whole life training. The 40...50...60 y/o guys (usually guys) out their doping. That's just stupid and you can really do some harm to your health at those ages. The best was when they were constantly advertising T supplements on TV a few years ago. That stuff is great if you don't mind a higher risk of the big C.
