I agree, its been amateur hour mainly in that people are getting in way over their heads. The meat wagon is at the base a couple of times a day, and the number of people I see struggling their way through the woods outnumbers the amount that should be there. One day my son and I "human slalomed" our way through the Nose Dive glades, it was ridiculous. It also infuriates me to see people side-slipping down the sides of the blacks and double blacks where the good snow is. Its the equivalent of skidding down the trail on a bike.
Its not just the cost of the Epic Pass, the population of the town has ballooned since COVID. The number of people that have moved in, primarily from Mass, has tripled the class sizes in the elementary schools. Now on powder days, everyone invites the fam and friends from wherever they moved from to be there the night before. Real estate prices are also similarly ridiculous, its a sellers market for sure. Cady Hill on summer weekends has been cray, I'm so glad they expanded the riding in other parts of town where the climbs preclude a lot of people. That's also why I hope they stay anti-ebike, but I know for a fact that's not going to last. My hope is that some day this bubble bursts. Some of these transplants maybe get tired of the shitty internet and harsh winters, get over the novelty of "country life" and move back to where they came from.
Thanks for the insight and it goes along with the change I've felt. I'm going to sound like an old grouch but I used to see all types of good skiers in the lift lines on a powder day. Now it's the same looking 30-40 year old something talking business or woods zones that they got from an app from how they describe them. I rode solo most of the day on Friday so was on lift with others and never heard "local" talk (like about Percy farm burning - which I feel would have been a big topic of discussion they day after it happened).
That is a huge bummer to hear about the tripling in size of the class numbers. That would frustrate me a lot. And I'm sure the housing has been a mess for lower paid workers that add a lot of value and flavor to a ski town.
I'm pretty apathetic about e-bike's but totally agree with you on an anti-ebike policy for the trails in town. But hopefully, like you said, they will tire of the country life and/or a new trend of urban revival living will be the next cool thing. If it does there might be some good deals on Sprinter vans 😉
