Commuting

oh yea i know, I was just sharing something else lol is that bad?

But if you want to talk about buzz's I get alot of buzz's through Manville and Foothill Road, oh and 206. Nothing we can do about it except wear Halter's argyle

Dunellen to bwater gives you a few route options, that will be a nice commute. I used to live in Middlesex.

A couple of things off the top of my head:
-ride the route before you actually try to commute.
-plan extra time at first, once you get a routine dialed in it gets faster and easier.
-if you are going to change at work, stash extras there if you can. A belt, socks, underwear, etc. There will be days you forget something. If you are in business attire it can't hurt to keep a complete outfit at work if you can store it, just in case.
-make sure you have a decent repair kit- tubes, pump, multi tool, quick links, zip ties/safety pins

Have fun with it. It takes time to figure out what works best. With a local commute like yours, if driving in a weeks worth of clothes is an option that will allow you to enjoy the ride more and not have to worry about carrying clothes in and out.

JUST DO IT!

Depends who you r. I like picking clothes in morning. Never know what my mood is.

Obey traffic laws as much as you can. If its too tight, ride the sidewalk here and there. Signal your turns.

Like chris says after a few days, you will get the routine down. The ride to work always feels longer cause honestly who wants to be at work. Numb your mind.

Thanks for the info guys. I don't think putting together a week's worth of clothes will work for me, but I like the idea of keeping at least one spare outfit. I was putting together all my gear last night and realized I should drive in all the stuff I need before I start bike commuting. I thought I had all the tools I needed for the bike kit, except for the zip ties - thanks for the heads up on that one. So my official commute will start on Monday. Basically going to take Rt28 from Dunellen to Bridgewater. It looks like a nice weekend so I'm planning to head down to Hartshorne tomorrow morning. I'm going to ride to Bridgewater Sunday to get a "feel" for the commute. I'll let you guys know how it goes. Thanks for all the great advice.

Mtbnj kits work as well : )

Depending on where in Bridgewater you are headed, you may also want to check out Lincoln Blvd to Main Street Bound Brook. I always found Lincoln Blvd to be less hairy than 28.

If you get ambitous you can go up Washington ave and ride the top of the ridge :getsome:

I've been checking out this thread you guys have inspired me to start commuting to work. My commute is 12 miles each way from Dunellen to Bridgewater and it's relatively flat. I have old Fuji Crosstown 7 speed that I picked up on the cheap and I'm going to give it a shot. It already had fenders, a rack and a tailight. I spent the last week tuning it up so I'm going to give it a go. I put on a CREE 1200 Lumen headlight and I got a key to the locker room at work so I can take a shower when I get there. Does anybody have any other advice?

Do you have a mountain bike? If you do, there's an access road that follows along the NJ Transit line the entire way to where you need to be. I get on in Dunellen just behind the Police Station and ride to Chimney Rock / 6-Mile Run all the time. No cars. Just another option.

getsome: I think Lincoln/Rt 28 is a six of one/half a dozen of the other alternative. Each one is a nice straight shot with a down side: Rt 28 has to cross 287 with the on/off ramps and Lincoln has the circle in Bound Brook. So I may switch it up just to keep it interesting (as if that will be an issue with all the cars on the road)

Jim: WOW......this is an option I didn't even know was available. I do have a mountain bike so this may also work. Just a quick question: Is this access road run along the gravel railroad bed or is a separate road/trail? I actually think I might prefer to roll this way rather than ride the road if it's feasible.

Thanks for all the great input...............I'm so effin' siked to get going with this!

Where is this access road? I grew up in Piscataway right by the tracks on South Avenue, I've never seen it. Not very observant i guess.

My commute is 120 sets of traffic lights and NYC traffic, I'd definitely prefer a gravel access road 😀

You guys that commute in the city def have some balls. That's a big part of why I decided to give the bike commute a try. I figured if there are guys willing to bike NYC, I should be able to pull off my pansy commute to Bridgewater😉

Just bibs nothing else, eh?

He wasn't kidding about bibs only. Plus boots and socks:

Getting back on the horse tomorrow after a 2+ week hiatus.

give me a heads up cuz I can do ft lee road like once or twice a week. Though it may require you to get up early and do laps at CP 😉

Know I'm not a "true" commuter, but thought I would post up that I rode part way to work today. My total drive is 37 miles each way, and being as that I have to be at work by 7 am, I drive midway and ride in so I ride about 18 miles each way.

Decided to take the Columbia Trail from Califon to Flanders on my CX bike. Lots of hoof prints made it for a bumpy ride - my light actually turned off at one point (the wire came disconnected). Dodged some deer, rabbits and horse dung. The hazards of living in Hunterdon county.

Was nice to be out this morning - will take the same route back this afternoon.

It runs along the railbed. Just before you hit the Bound Brook station there's a little shed of some sort, go across the CST tracks and you'll see a trail next to a billboard that'll put you onto the road just at the bridge in the BB Circle. It took me quite a while exploring every inch of that area to come up with this route 😀

Here's where you get on.

And this is what it looks like once you're out of civilization 😀

I use this to get to Chimney Rock and 6-Mile Run. It's possible to do 50+ miles without touching the road :getsome:

I was talking to myself this morning on how lonely it has been riding lately. Seems all my riding has been by myself. Even though the Park is full of chase or chasers its still not the same. I am ready to start doing the Hudson drive route with the stupid climb on my SS, hint hint. As of this Sunday i need fellow peeps who want to maybe ride some ridiculously long painful ride be it road or mnt.

Good to see your back Robin, very jealous of your commute. What route do you use to get up the mountain?

I park in Califon and if I take the CX bike, I ride the Columbia trail all the way to the end in Flanders - then cross 206 to Roxbury.

If I ride the road, there are a few options - I usually just take 513 to Long Valley, past West Morris HS since it's the most direct/quickest. On the way home, I vary it - I've gone over Schooley's Mtn, through Mendham/Peapack...loop back around through Tewksbury.

I'm thinking that once it gets a little warmer/I'm a bit stronger, I'll park in High Bridge - that will ad 10 miles each way to my commute.

Matt, give me a few more days to get my head in it. It was tough to get into it today after taking so much time off. Once I get back in the groove I'll be game for some longer mornings 1-2 times a week.

Robin, good stuff, glad to hear your giving it a go again.

I might start up when I pick up my road bike from Halters, short ride though. Only 3 miles one way, but I could take the long way but I'm a little leary of 206 in Hillsborough during rush hour.
