no. people understood you perfectly. they're just f##king with you. welcome to mtbnj.com

as a side note....one of my hobbies is watching "fail" videos on Youtube and other websites. you see video after video of kids on skateboards and bmx bikes doing REALLY dangerous stunts (e.g., trying to ride a 40-foot stair rail) almost ALL without helmets and pads.

I guess its the stupidity of youth and/or thining of the herd, but I cant imagine what would possess someone to do a dangerous stunt without a helmet where their head is 20 feet above concrete and steel.

well I do know the answer it's peer pressure and the desire to look bad ass

but man do they look stupid when their skull bounces off the pavement

if ANYONE should be wearing a helmet its those guys. the mountain biking most of us here do, is 1/100th the risk those guys take

I want to live in a country where the government makes all you decisions for you. And if there is a state where its residents enforce their own 'make beleive' rules that would be a big plus. And, if I could find such a state, inside such a country, I would like to find a website where such people hang out. Where should I start, Im sick of living in the land of the free.

Ok, last week I was in Fl with no mandatory helmet laws for motorcycle riding. Where I was was also a place for lots of bicycle riders. I think this was the score:

People wearing helmets:

Motorcycles riders: maybe 2%
Scooter riders 50% (daughter with father/ daughter had helmets)
Bicycle riders: maybe 85%

I never tell anybody to wear a helmet. I ride with a helmet on my road and mtn bike. I have a ss townie bike with racks fenders that I usually ride with no helmet.

The one time I was with a group who "informed" an adult rider that they should wear a helmet on the trails it was no so well received by the person.

Is that guy in the back wearing a skort?

can we switch to blowing through stop signs and red lights -
helmet issues seems played out. 😀

and yeah, welcome to mtbnj where there is quite a dose of sarcasm,
some very capable comedians, and people that ride bikes.

that is a twisted set of facts/numbers - my wager would be non-helmet people get in a higher %
of accidents. also, it doesn't extract the commuter aspect, post happy hour, along rt 46 in parsippany.

Dude to be honest I only got through half of your original post and missed that part.
Have a good ride and be careful out there..

So AL.. what's your reasoning for not wearing a helmet all of the time?
Why do you wear one while in the trails, where it might be a soft impact, as opposed to not wearing one while riding on the road, or on a BMX, where the impact is almost always going to be devastating.. I'm a Psychology major, I enjoy these types of debates.... reiterating, I don't give a dumb dog's dong if you wear one or not, just interested in the "Why not" part...

I got yelled at the other day for rolling through a red light at a minor intersection. No cars on the road I crossed. He yelled at me through the safety of his sunroof.

A derailleur killed my dad and my sister was raped by a suspension fork. There's a lot of little forkers running around her house now and none of them wear helmets. And people ask me why I always ride a rigid singlespeed. Go ahead, ask.

johnee - i am of the same mind.

dont really care whether others wear or not.

but dont understand why one would wear a helmet on the trails, but not when doing bmx which (depending on the tricks and the setting....concrete) can be MANY TIMES more dangerous than typical mtb.

so, also just curious as to the "why?"

if we don't close this, i can see this easily becoming this year's winter shoes thread.

and damn, bruce is on freaking fire!

... i have had concussions/stiches head injury's throughout the years with and without helmets on.Also got hit by a car twice...

Since you seem to be um, accident prone, maybe you should wear a helmet so your family (or the state) doesn't get stuck changing your diaper and emptying your drool cup for the rest of your vegetative life after you take a big hit.
