As many of you know, I'm off to Taiwan soon. I asked for Luke's advice on how to unlock the iPhone and he sent me here:

The page is currently unavailable, but when it was, it seemed a bit too much for me to take on with the trip a mere 9 days away. Meaning: I can't afford to spend an entire day battling with this thing when it doesn't go well.

I'm looking for the easy solution. I'm willing to pay for this, but I want to make sure I'm not throwing $$ away in doing that.

Any experience/suggestions welcomed.
 
It does look easy enough.

But both sites skip how to get Cydia on your phone. Is that part of the jailbreaking process?

yes cydia is part of jailbreaking for all intents and purposes

Jailbreaking is basically installing cydia.
The jailbreakme.com will install cydia
Just go there from safari on your phone.
 
Cool, thanks. I'll give this a shot on the wife's old iPhone. Less risky and all that.
 
Every version of the os requires a different unlock and jailbreak. Apple patches the hole every time they update the os.
So make sure she's on the same version as you.
You can find the 4.0 firmware on the net, google how to force iTunes to restore from specific file.'do not upgrade to the new os! You can't unlock the new one (yet)
Get cydia on right away and "make my life easier" and you can fake apple's activation by fudging your host file to cydia instead of apple, but only after you "make my life easier"
 
I think every version, bootroom, combo is doable now. I had my fair share of battling an iphone like 6 months ago before all these new hacks came out. I had new bootrom and was fvcked. You can still do it with new bootrom but it's complicated. Ultimately I sold the phone for what I paid for it and went android but 2 months later the new jailbreak came out 😡 But not really mad I'm off with a better phone now (GalaxyS) - unlockable, tetherable, no PIA sh!t

Not sure where everything stands now but pay attn to a few things, firmware, baseband, and bootrom. Most can be checked knowing your serial# and phone properties itself.
 
Luke - both my wife's old phone and my phone are the same, both 3GS on OS 4.0. She's also got the 4, which I'm not touching.

Manny's post is what makes me hesitate - fw, baseband, bootrom...these are all details I don't really want to get into. The tuturials seem pretty easy. Will give it a shot today.

At the end of the road, how can I confirm that it actually worked?
 
If you haven't gone past 4.0.1, it should be amazingly easy via jailbreakme, whatever version you got. You'll know you it worked when the you see the Cydia icon.
 
Shut up and do it norm, 4.0 is cake to jailbreak/ unlock
You need to know a lot more if you want to upgrade the os while keeping the unlock
You don't care to do that, so don't worry
 
You will be fine Norm.

Worst case, you have to restore your phone.
Just make sure you back up your phone before jailbreak/ unlock.😀

Can you imagine if Toyota started selling a car that could only be fueled at a Hess station and they prevented you from filling it elsewhere by putting a special gas filler on it? And if you modified the car to put gas in from another station they voided your waranty?

Ok I did the first one. It was as easy as advertised.

How do I know I was successful in unlocking it? I know I did the jailbreak because of Cydia. But how can I verify it was unlocked?

And are all jailbreak apps installed via Cydia?
