Wildlife

Speaking of wildlife, saw something new at a golf course yesterday. Heard a lot of bird squawking in a large pine tree and as we walked down the fairway a big redtailed hawk flew out with a small bird in pursuit. Right over our heads, the small bird landed on the Hawks back and rode him for a good several hundred yards. I've seen little birds go after hawks hundreds of times but never saw a rodeo act like that. Pretty cool

I came around a turn in Kittatinny 2 weeks ago and had a good face to face with mama bear and four cubs. Small little guys...2 scaled a tree and the others ran behind mama. I turned around ASAP ha ha.

Saw these 3 little guys on the yellow trail at CR this morning. Almost ran 1 over. They weren't afraid of me at all & almost seemed like they wanted to play. Kept looking for the Mom but luckily for me she wasn't anywhere around. (sorry for the shitty pic, in was a little humid today & the camera got steamed up).

Jungle Habitat- This guy let me get real close before he took off ...

Almost ran over a snake at Six Mile yesterday, also saw a blue heron upstream of the concrete bridge. The only other animal I've almost hit was a turkey hanging out on the trail in the WMA by Mahlon. Regularly see deer, heron, ducks, hawks, and of course bear at Mahlon.

Had a bird fly into my front wheel on a road ride Friday, that was a bit odd. It bounced off the spokes thankfully. Looked like it was trying to catch a bug.

Hmm somethings not quite right with that Mountain Lion. It's face looks abnormally swollen and it's movement is rather lethargic and clumsy.

Obviously there was something wrong with the kitty, large swelling on side of face.
There was no "terrifying" anything and certainly no "stand off"
Disappointing.
Now get a wildlife vet up there to find the poor kitty and fix his booboo.

So I'm riding at 6 mile run this evening and the weeds are closing in. On blue trail I skirt some weeds and feel something on my left lower leg. Look down and there's something skinny, 4-5 in long and bright green on my leg. I first assume it's a weed and will fall off with a few pedal revolutions. But as I pedal, it feels like it has little arms and is hugging my leg, and it's not falling off. Then it feels like it's starting to climb up, so I scream like a little girl (sorry ladies) and smack it off. Was it a large praying mantis? Or just a weed? Or an alien lifeform?

Unless I'm mistaken, we don't have stick insects in NJ. @capedoc, gonna need a ruling here. 🙂

So, of the things it could be, a young (read small) Praying Mantis is the most likely.

So Rick, how friggen slow were you going to be able for a Mantis to hitch a ride? 😉
