Wildcat 100

On the car ride up to New Paltz with Kirt a rock hit the windshield and cracked it. As Kirt was driving he said maybe that’s a bad omen. As I looked at the crack right in front of me I dismissed it and said no, its gonna be a good race.

I think Kirt was right about that omen for the WC100. It rained most of the race, I had two flats, put a kink in a chain that Pearl would be proud of, kept dropping my chain off the lower pulley and finally broke my derailleur. I am getting so good at fucking up derailleur’s that I don’t even have to google the spelling anymore.

With so many mechanical problems, riding my mtb 100 miles became more of a mental test. 26er helped me out with my first flat. We were only 5 miles in but it was nice to have a buddy to calm me down and get going again. At mile 55 Havoc (Jeff) was nice enough to stop and help me repair my chain. After 55 miles on a bike I find it difficult to tie my shoes, luckily Jeff had a chain tool and was able to help me keep going. I had to laugh when my derailleur stopped working after Jeff helped me out. Luckily I already did the big climb in the race and had some really nice down hills to ride. I managed to limp back on the Wallkill rail trail with my excess chain dangling on a derailleur that did not take up the slack.

I ended up with 82 miles and was on the bike for almost 8hrs. This is the most time and miles I put on a mtb and probably the most challenging ride I have done mentally. There were times I seriously thought about bailing and getting a ride back, but once I made a repair and started pedaling again I realized that this was a test, so I accepted the challenge. Riding in the valley of the Wallkill rail trail for the last 13 miles was really quite beautiful despite the rain.

I don’t believe in omens, but if I do this race next year and get a crack in the windshield on the way up you may not see me at the starting line…bitch.

I give you a ton of credit for doing this race...was thinking of you guys and waiting patiently for updates. Imagine my "bummer" expression when S posted your race was done too early.
 
Iggy, when thought of this race, I figured your engine was very well suited for it. You did a 20mph century I think? Next time you'll crush it...

Nice work man and way to continue despite the issues. That's half the battle some times. Yea I see that final pic and I'm glad I opted out of this one as well 🙂
 
Nice work man, that sounds like hell! I have no idea what is going on with the drivetrain on that bike, you lubing your chain with orange juice?
 
Wow man talk about attrition. Good job keeping your head together. I agree this probably suits your condition. ( mental condition as well 😉))
 
WC 100 Post Race

The pic of me in the rain looks worse than it actually was. Yes I was wet and muddy and the course was a mess but at least it wasn't cold out. For me the mechanicals where way more aggravating. IMO the course for a 100 mile mtb race is always gonna be kinda lame. To get that many miles in you have to add a lot of road/rail trail, which ends up being boring on a mtb. I prefer 2 laps of kickass trails...like Bearscat 50.

Well I took my F'd up bike to Vreeland so he can fix my derailleur. He took it apart and fixed the spring inside that was somehow doing the opposite of what a derailleur is supposed to do. He also played with my pulley's. I'm gonna go bang around on some trails today to see if I can brake it. If I'm gonna race Jungle on Sunday I have to get this thing working correctly.

The other thing I need to straighten out is my rear tire. When I flatted my Ignigtor Saturday I threw a tube in it, the new exo's never seal with Stan's once you get a hole in the tread. Now I am in search of a new tire. The hot tire now seems to be the new Bontrager 29-3 Expert...and you can't get it anywhere. With Jungle and Bearscat coming up I need a racing tire thats good in the rocks. What should I get and where can I get it???
 
29-3 is a solid tire though after SSaP i have had a slow leak on the rear that hasnt sealed. Doesnt matter much i prolly wont ride my mtb again untill BS50.

How can anyone find a bontrager tire? they have the worst naming system that has ever been invented. I think the 29-3 is now called the XR-3, which is both 26" and 29" so is there a xr-3, 29-3 team issue?

Im sticking with my ignitors, but from now on I will only buy the NON exo versions that are 60 rather than 120 TPI.

I agree that someone should lose a job over at bontrager. I wonder how many bailed on their tires because of the confusion. The tire you posted are the ones i grabbed. I really like them much sturdier then the ignitors. Not much of a weight penalty either.

completely different tire. Exo versions are 120 TPI, thin casing with added sidewall protection. They usually flat on the tread. Fast rocky downhill are the best place to kill them. The non exo version is a 60 tpi thicker casing throughout. They weigh the same, but in my experience after 3 years of using them, the non exo versions are more durable. The exo versions are ok, but you need to ride them for a while and let the stans get embedded in the casing. Also, I have found once the tread wears down a bit, the tire is less likely get pinched on a rock. I will never use a new tire for a race, ever. Ill take a beat to shit tire that half made of dried stans for a race anyday.

Exo version is awful in the north. They rip open in the center of the tread and don't seal

Isn't this true for most mtb tire manufacturer's. Look at what Maxxis did to the EXO. Doesn't anyone test this shit out before they sell it??? For what you pay for tires the quality is total crap...If Andy Rooney where alive he'd do a 70 minute rant about the mtb tyre industry on 60 minutes.

Santalucia - Kirt was telling me you got those up in Sussex...thats just too damn far to get them before Jungle on Sunday. I'm gonna stop at Halter's on the way home from work. What's good in there, I need to walk out with a good tire for Jungle

I'm pretty sure that the "29-3 Expert" is NOT the tire you want.

The one you want used to be called:
: 29-3 Team Issue 2.3 TLR
and now it is called:
: XR3 Team Issue 29x2.3 TLR

Get either of those and you should be golden.

The tread should look like this, and make sure it is size 2.3:


NOT like either of these, which go by almost identical names:
